That's not revisionist. There's always exceptions, but illicit drugs were more confined to urban and lower-income areas. In the 60's, drugs moved out of the cities and into the suburbs in a much larger way. This had largely to do with the "baby boomer" generation moving away from their home towns to attend university which happened in much greater numbers than ever before and the same generation coming home from Vietnam having used dope or already addicted to heroin, morphine.

Now alchohol and spousal abuse seems to be a whole lot more widespread in the 50's than "Leave it to Beaver" would have you believe.

I agree that in the 60's drugs started to spread massively... but there's a group of people who actually believe that everything before the 60's was idyllic, no drugs, no crime and whatnot. People forget that there was "the Mob" and immigrant slums with incredibly high crime rates during the first half of 20th century. Or if you go back even further to the good old ultra puritan Victorian era, opium abuse was incredibly common then.

Totally agree with you on the booze thing, I know a bunch of anthropologists who have done massive research on civil life in the 20th century and they are constantly amazed how many alcoholic wife beating dads were during the 50's in many western countries.

Sax is my main instrument and started playing it because of jazz. Fortunately, we get some good acts here in Greece and the local scene, though small, is also alive with alot of different stuff going on (though fusion is alot more popular in the jazz clubs and cafes than "traditional" jazz, which is seen more in the concert halls).

You'd be on speed too if your drunk husband came home every night from the factory and beat you.

Funny, in Italy fusion is also more popular than traditional jazz.
