When you consider it was assimilated (not in the least part due to its influence and dominance in clerical circles in the Middle Ages) and has shaped much of our modern world, together with Greek, both in linguistics and most other domains of human progress, I'd say it has survived. It was made by a bunch of dudes who thought they were very clever but through most of the history no one, except for a handful of wealthy folks, scholars and priests, bothered to learn it correctly. The rulers of Rome of course wanted it to spread but Italics, Gauls, Iberians, Dacians etc. half-assed it since the beginning. The people didn't take it seriously, they made their own thing out of it. Incredibly influential but ultimately weak and unpleasant sounding language. Personally I'm glad that when I visit Genova then no one speaks like fucking Nero
