  • So bad things come in 3's right?

Just need to vent a bit... So my band has been disintegrating slowly over the past month or so, thats pretty much done. Im not gonna get into the typical band details cause ya'll know how it is, but it just sucks. I used to have alot of fun with it, but when people dont pull their own weight and live performances suffer, I cant handle that... I take the music I write seriously, and I think every band member should be able to play it damn near flawlessly before they go off and start another band with the singer.

So then on the way from what was probably our last show two Saturdays ago, me and the girl stop at the diner as we do after every show. On the way out, the transmission in my Tahoe lets go... I managed to nurse it home, full of gear from said show, and that was that. Ugh I love the thing, but Im really not in the mood to swap out a transmission right now, Im trying to get some things finished around the house and with work being busy, I just dont have the energy. No big problem, atleast I still have my pickup truck to drive and the girl still has the Monte Carlo to tote the kids around in until I find a transmission and put it in.

Until today. She mentioned that it was slipping in first gear, only did it twice. Well this past Saturday, we went to Philly to see my buddys in Flesh Engine debut their new drummer... on the way there, it started stuttering in first gear... fuck. Today after work I decided to take a $30 gamble and change the trans oil and filter. Either it would fix the problem due to a clogged filter, or would accellerate the problem with the new, clean fluid. I lost that gamble, now its almost undriveable its slipping so bad in first... not safe enough to tote the kids around in. And Im not about to put a $1000 transmission in a 115k mile car thats barely worth $1000 in good condition.

So now were stuck... My truck is only a regular cab so no carting kiddies around in it, and I need it to get to work anyway. We dont have much in savings ever since she got laid off, its been dwindling. She was one week short of qualifying for the federal unemployment extension, so now were down to one income... Me. So now we dont have much in savings, she still cant find work, and were out two of our primary vehicles. Yay. Ive also got two Trans Am's Ive had since I was 19, but theyre really not in driveable condition nor are they worth anything to sell in their condition. Money has been kinda tight so I havent put anything into them in a while.

So yeah, not real sure how Im gonna pull this one off. Just needed to vent. I guess its time to inventory the guitars and take one for the team eh?

Somehow I have always had more luck changing transmissions than doing fluid/filter changes.
    I have no idea why.
I have come to the the conclusion if the tranny is good, don't fugg with it.

Chevy has had some bad rep on those in the past couple of decades.

No consolation but you are not alone.

I feel for you. I can't find work since last july. I only have a few more months of the extended unemployment left too. It only covers the mortgage.

        Rob,

Can you change the tranny in my '70 Challenger after you change your two? LOL!

Sorry, but that is shitty luck, but I can relate. The manual tranny in my 1984 Trans Am blew. That cost a fortune. Then the auto in my wife's 1987 GTA blew.

What year is the Tahoe? I ask because I have a 2003 with 100K+ miles on it.

Taking the Tahoe to the trans shop tomorrow... they have a feeling that the trans isnt bad from what I described to them, so heres keeping the fingers crossed! And my fiancee's grandparents may be getting a new car in the next few days, so they decided that if they do theyll be giving us there 2001 Oldsmobile minivan with 20,000 miles on it! Itll be the newest and lowest mielage vehicle well have ever owned! Im really not big on getting something for nothing... just not my thing, I like to work for what I have, but in this case Im EXTREMELY grateful for their offer... thats really awesome of them! Only problem is figuring out a way to get up to Lancaster to get it!

Don, funny you mention the GTA, Ive got an 88 Gunmetal GTA Hardtop and a 92 TA Convertible. The GTA was my first car and I never got rid of it. Actually put a new motor in it a few years ago and got it running, but it still needs some work to be 100% roadworthy and reliable, not to mention paint. The 92 isnt doing very well either... I had the T5 rebuilt some years ago and the guy did a horrible job, so its difficult to shift. Synchros are gone among other things... also has a bad top, which Im gonna have to drop the cash to replace if I dont want the poor thing to rust out. Ive got the interior out and am going to sand blast and bedline the floors so Ill never have to worry about them again.

The 84 have a 4 speed or T5? IIRC they used the siginaw 4 speed in 84 right?

Here's hoping the Tahoe needs a much cheaper fix. I thought my clutch had gone in my Focus and it turned out to just be the coil pack.

I'm glad all of my cars are manuals. They're a lot cheaper to repair when the clutch goes. Sorry to hear of your money woes. I'm sure many folks will have big problems when the federal unemployment money runs out. Good luck.

Admin: The software is putting the word "woe" in this post twice. When I attempt to edit it the word only appears once.

I'll never buy another car with an automatic tranny. Or a Ford, GM or Chrysler for that matter.

                  Sorry about the bad luck.

Sorry about your luck. Hopefully the tranny isn't bad and it's a quick (and much cheaper) fix.

I like the fact a manual trans can last a million miles as long as you change the required fluid frequently (and never let a woman drive it).

We are talking 1987 - I'm pretty sure it was a 5 speed. Cost $2K to rebuild back then.

My first car was a 70 Challenger that never let me down in 3 years. A friend went into the Air Force and gave me the TA. I sold the Challenger, and a week later the tranny blew, and I'm without a way to work.

                        Dad....Do you have $2,000 I can borrow?

My 1990 GTA sits a lot. I don't have insurance on it because $700 a year for a car you drive 1,000 miles a year at most (when I first got it) is not worth it. I drive it around once in a while to keep it up. Mechanically it's in great shape. Needs a new exaust(sp?) system. And it needs a lot of TLC to make it show worthy. Interior is leather, but has been used. Body has a few dings and dents, and one bubble of rust by the rear side light. But it's quick out of the gate, 79K miles, and the oil can sit in the motor for 2 years and still look new.

Insurance won't be that much if you're not driving it much. My insurance bill recently went down $200/year because my wife only drives her car 5000 miles a year.

Not to mention that it's completely irresponsible and (in civilized states) illegal.

That too. If Don gets pulled over in that car, he would lose his license in PA.
