  • Post band life bedroom boredom(not that way!)

Anybody else here find playing the guitar solo at home boring after being used to having other musicians in the room. Ever since I got into my first major band situation, all I do at home now is tweak the EQ on the amp for hours. I play nothing constructive, just change the EQ play a few chords and then do it all over again with different EQ settings. Kinda gets boring after a while and a little saddening. What can I do to find the love at home again?? Any suggestions? I mean its not a total waste of time as I regularly find new tones I like from my amp(of course, then Im torn as to which I like better), it just gets old after a while. It gets so bad most of the time that I dont even touch my guitar but 2 or 3 times a week between practice cause I look at it like whats the point.

I remember days of old before I played with others on a regular basis and played out often that playing with the stereo was veery entertaining, but that doesnt interest me at all anymore. I was learning and polishing new techniques on nearly a daily basis, but now Ive run out of direction. I miss the joy of the guitar at home.

Im using a $2500 guitar primarily for noodling(the new band is in its infant stages right now), how sad is that. Any input as to what to do about this would be great.

I suggest you get a loop station or a drum machine or something like that. I use the Line 6 Jam Looper. Lets you play along with some drum beats, rhythm section and is a great practice aid to me.

very simply...use this time to write new material and record it...also work on any chops you feel you may be lacking in...set yourself some goals to become a better player and songwriter and you'll find the time flies...might also explore new styles like jazz or classical...the opportunities are endless when you think about it...d.m.

take the time to listen to great music, it always delivers and inspires. it will make you pick up
        your guitar again.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

I'll second (third?) the suggestion to listen to some new stuff. I recently been diggin into 60's white-guy blues stuff that I never really got into before - Mike Bloomfield, Free and Backstreet Crawler by Kossoff. I guess B-list white guy blues stuff. And you can always go with the classics - stuff like Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. I like to try and draw connections from the 60s blues, to blues rock, to early metal (Sabbath and Priest) to late 70's metal, then NWOBHM, Thrash. Sometimes you find some stinkers, but there's from Free stuff that leads right into what Dave Murray was playing in Iron Maiden. Trippy.

you should do a side project and find musicians who kicks your ass and who play totally different music so that you'd get out of your comfort zone, improving yourself becomes a necessity

              Some great suggestions.

Learn some new songs, write some new songs, get any number of software packages available for computer to do bass/drum parts on, or download "backing tracks" - anything to jam along with and keep things interesting.

whenever my band is on hiatus, i write and record new material. i also go out to blues jams and play with other people. sometimes i grab my acoustic and go to the coffee house and do a short set of acoustic songs.

i often do studio session work as well. that is a fun one. i get paid to lay guitar solos on songs that i didn't write, often in styles i would never play. if you are interested in that, look under "gigs" on craigslist or call different local studios and see if the engineer/producer needs a guitarist.

i have 12-13 studios in the west-central florida region that will call me if they need a guitarist on something. the pay isn't that awesome, maybe 10-15 dollars an hour, but it is a blast. plus it really gets your chops up. when you are laying tracks in a project studio, or even in a higher tier studio that an artist is paying for themselves, you don't even have to sight read. often there will be a "lead sheet" with the chords and lyrics, you determine the key and just let it go. sometimes you have to listen to the what the artist wants, but often they have NO idea so you can try a few things - on their coin, too! - until they hear something they like.

                  just a couple ideas....
                  GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

                  and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

                    WTF????!!!!

I didn't read ALL the bullshit advice from my fellow brosephs...but I did read the intial whateverthefuck!

I did put that jamband whaterdafuggin' link in my favorites tho..for my kid. So he can learn to solo over shit. So that's cool..

What ya gotta learn is how to anchor your hand to your pud..and pull it 'til it skeets all over yourself ..while watchin' some nasty ass internet porn.. Now THAT'S inspiration. It works for me..and for everyone else on this fuggin' forum and elsewhere.

Even better..maybe have your woman anchor her big ass on your fuckstick! ..I play like a fuggin' methed up Steve Vai in early Megadeth after that shit!

Now that's good advice right there..from your uncle Bubz!!!

I suggest you open your curtains, take off all your clothes, phone up your neighbour across the street and tell them to look at your house. Then put your guitar on and duck-walk backward and forward past the windows.
Go from left to right upstairs, then crawl under the window back to the left side and do it again. Hours of fun.
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!
