Sad news indeed. He was one of the greats. I got to see him on Sacred Heart and Dream Evil tours. I remember on the Sacred heart tour he did an encore, went off stage, the light came on, 1/2 the people had left and then boom,the lights went off again and he did another encore.

Westboro is just a bunch of fucking crackpots- nothing christian about them except the fact that they claim to be.

They're such a miniscule little shit sect of nobodies (it's mostly members of one idiot family) that they're totally irrelevant except as an interesting law school case study surrounding free speech & fighting words (which I do believe is in front of some court now.)

They get an unbelievable amount of press, imo for a few reasons: First, they're a fucking freak show, and the news business is the entertainment business, so there you go. Second, and I do not mean to turn this into a defense of Christianity or anything else and would rather just focus on these idiots specifically, but they are a perfect fucking poster child to point at as a caricature of what people think is an intolerant bible belter.... You couldn't fucking INVENT these assholes, no matter how poorly you think of religious people. Third, there is the legal aspect, which is the most interesting or news worthy piece of this situation.

There's a saying- "Bad situations make for bad law". You get some total fucking wingnut out of left field who is doing something so far outside of the mainstream & there's an urge by legislators and courts to "fix" the problem. Unfortunately, when you "fix" the problem you end up catching a whole bunch of other things up in your new prohibition.

My opinion is that the Patriot Riders handle these idiots the right way. Real simple. No violence, no violation of their "rights" as they exist today. They just ride their Harleys up, position themselves between the Westboro idiots and the funeral, and hammer their throttle every time the Westboro idiots go into one of their moron chants. Hey, go ahead, exercise your rights- And the PR will exercise theirs.

Now if we could get them out of the paper every day we could let them devolve back into the little pitiful non-entities that they are.

Incidentally, the majority of the family are also lawyers...their MO is to wait for someone to "violate" their rights, whether it's the cops or otherwise, and then sue. It's how they finance themselves, and there's a belief out there that they're really in the business of inducing someone to do the wrong thing for cash settlements and the whole religion thing is a convenient vehicle.

EDIT- I believe 4chan is running something called "Operation: Holy Diver", which is starting with a DDS attack on Westboro's website (big deal). Who knows what's next. Clearly illegal, even immoral in a sense, but I don't think I'm going to spend too much time worrying about it and I sincerely doubt law enforcement is going to put too many people "on the case" to find out who is doing it.
