I haven't been on for awhile, but I expected to find a world cup thread?! Or is it just too far down the line for me to see? Who did everyone: want to win, and who did they think would win? I KNEW spain had it, but Italy has been my favorite since I was 4 yearsold. And Im 100% dutch so when Italy goes out, I of course, root for the netherlands.

There was kind of a thread here: http://www.jcfonline.com/threads/107929-USA-Wins!
I usually cheer for The Netherlands (when they're not playing and beating Denmark). I lived in The Netherlands for a while and I like their style of play and their players. But their play and whining this year, especially in the finale, was nothing short of a disgrace! The ref handed out too few cards, if you ask me, and he should have booted De Jong and van Bommel early for their violent play that went far beyond 'being physical'. I don't mind physical play, but what they did was consistently dangerous. Anyways, I'm happy Spain won. I honestly thought Germany was going to win it until the game against Spain.
EDIT: I just recalled that I read that a retired top ref went over the game here and deemed that there should have been handed out no less than five red cards.

Its funny because I am the opposite. I only think the dangerous plays like the boot to the chest should have been called. Im a firm believer in the ref calling less. As long as its on both sides. Keeps the game flowing. And yeah they did over embellish. But my main team is Italy, the big divers, so Im not phased by hollands overembellishment lol.I hooked up my accelerator pedal in my car to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

I had picked Spain at the beginning, but got a little scared after their first game. I wanted either Spain or the Dutch to win their first, but I wouldn't have minded seeing the Germans winning it with such a young squad either. Brazil always seems to win and I was hoping they'd fail just because Dunga decided to leave Ronaldinho at home and play a different style of footy. And as long as I didn't have to see Diego's ugly mug or hear Diego's idiotic comments any longer, I would have been happy having anyone knock out Argentina!
Once they started playing the final, I was fairly disgusted with the Dutch play...they played more like Division III college players than professionals. I know the Dutch tend to play a little rough sometimes, but that was a bit ridiculous. I love to let them play as much as anyone, but that was bad. De Jong should have been sent off no doubt. I don't know that van Bommel should have been sent off early, but the ref missed a pretty bad one that should have been his 2nd yellow later in the 2nd half. I don't mind a physical brand of play, but they were simply reckless.
I gotta say though, Uruguay surprised and played fantastic throughout the tourney...Forlan was the player of the tourney IMO...apparently the ONLY player able to figure out the Jabulani!

Oh very true. Diego was fandamtastic. And his mastery of the jabulani was very noticeable! But I believe it was Mueller who won the golden (ball or boot?) because of assists? (I didnt watch the ceremony afterwards as I had to go to work)I hooked up my accelerator pedal in my car to my brake lights. I hit the gas, people behind me stop, and I'm gone.

I would have guessed that we'd see GER vs NL in the finale, even though I enjoy seeing the South American teams more. But somehow Brazil and Argentina tend to fall apart in the end games, and the strong Euro teams are always solid.
I think we got plenty of boring games this year though? Or maybe it was just that the Swedish team never qualified this year, and that made me a little disinterested.
A shame, because SA was rocking with enthusiasm!

I'm kind of glad the finale GER vs NL did not happen.
I'm sure NL can handle bad feelings against the spanish, but things wouldn't have been that easy with their direct neighbour germany.
I guess this could have harmed the dutch/german relationship quite badly.
I'm not into football at all, but anyway, it was a quite exciting cup.
our team did pretty well, though spain won absolutely deserved.
in the finale; I was actually cheering for oranje, but they didn't play a nice game IMO.
this was a pure slaughter...tremstick give-away (performer series trem)

Nice games! Very surprising turn of events! A country which was considered the underdogs from day 1 winning the world cup. A country that lost a match in the very first round winning the cup. Very interesting!
I had started a thread way before the matches started but no one seemed too excited about it.Sam
