Regarding the nonsense you just wrote, the burden of proof is on you, since you are the one making the claims. And for the umpteenth time, I never claimed Broderick wasn't capable or had the potential. As for your request for evidence, it is known as "argument from ignorance" and is a logical fallacy. You are here using it in the following way (and I quote from wiki): " In debates, appeals to ignorance are sometimes used to shift the burden of proof." Go google it.
I understand logic better than you think. I am not the one who brought up the issue of Chris not making creative contributions in Megadeth, that was you. Logic would suggest that since you raised that issue, you are questioning whether he can. I'm just reading between the lines of what you DID say and what that implies.

    • I think the real question here is whether John Petrucci or Chris Broderick bought stuff from Guitar Parts Depot and got "scammed" on shipping!

Do you honestly feel that DT have been progressing for their past 4 albums? If anything they're regressing to a more radio-friendly hard rock band. Everytime I listen to Images & Words, I am blown away by the amazing songwriting and musicianship. Everytime I listen to Systematic Chaos, I come away bored and wish that Rudess would play piano instead of the second guitar part.

I'd be surprised if they have one more album released before breaking up. They're out of ideas, and have been for almost ten years.
No, I think all their last albums have been crap too. I'm speaking that generally music or any kind of art dies when you play it safe.

Don't ever talk about how crappy the food was in some diner/restaurant if you're not a cook yourself. Never. Enjoy any kind of shit you'll be served, because it's made by the prophesionhals.

As Spivonius said, I don't know what makes you so bitter towards Dream Theater. They're just a band like many others trying to make their way in the world. You speak as though you're superior to it all, yet where is the evidence of that? If you're good enough to be condescending about John Petrucci and Chris Broderick, I'd dearly love to hear your playing.
                Bitter? Yeah sure!
They put out a reality show, it's available for anyone and is open to critique. As it's full shit you bet your ass I'm taking a dump on it.
I guess that's a compliment to me if you feel that I'm superior, funny I haven't mentioned anything like that at all. Evidence? Perhaps the lack of me being in a reality show talking stupid bullshit.
Buy a plane ticket and a MacGyver tape... for yourself that is, just to make sure that I would never hear you say anything bad about any musician. Then we can enjoy watching all those retarded reality shows with fading rockstars together, awesome!

                • I don't think you are superior at all, Endy - I just think YOU think you are. I think you figure, why learn or at least respect the skills a band like DT has when you can pretend to be a jaded scenester who's above it all instead? Go on with your bad self and your stupid restaurant analogy.

                  • You think a lot of interesting things in this thread, like pulling stuff out of your ass is a good idea. Here's the the latest - I have no respect for the skill DT has. Wow, how do you come up with this stuff? Are you a soothsayer, a guru, a psychic? This is no way to have a discussion bro. I don't believe in mambo-jambo, gotta have some empirical evidences to back up the arguments.

                    • I see what E is saying, you can have all the technical skills in the world and still write crappy songs. True music is made when you're pushing you own boundaries and showing real emotion, i.e. taking risks. Dream Theater hasn't taken a risk in ten years. Portnoy got bored with it and quit the band. DT, instead of taking the opportunity to reflect on why he left and make a change for the better, came out with a reality show in an effort to gain some more publicity and generate album sales. DT is on cruise control and the musicians who like their older stuff are voicing displeasure.

That's the point. Images & Words, Awake, and Falling into Infinity, and Scenes from a Memory all have great songs. The ones since then are boring (with occasional high spots).

                          • i know. i thought it was the easiest way to sum it all up. as far as their search for a drummer, i agree they need to find someone that is faithful to the original song - changing them up doesn't prove lack of stagnation. what WOULD prove a lcak of stagnation is if the drummer injected them with some life and their newest album actually had good songs on it. in order for that to happen, the new guy would need to satisfy two difficult elements, one being a mindset to approach the existing material faithfully, the second being his ability to be creative and help the band find its "new" self. that is not an easy thing to do.

Portnoy was calling all the shots and running the band like a control freak. You might say he got bored with himself, but he can't take responsibility to change those things that made HIM the rut, so he had a midlife crisis including an "affair" with a band half his age. Then he wanted another, indefinite, hiatus, they said no, and THEN he quit. Just filling in the blanks in case you forgot. A7X wouldn't let him stay on because they didn't want him taking over their band, and suddenly Portnoy was ready to return? Think your wife would take you back if you fucked the secretary for a few months, decided you wanted to marry her, but then the sec said she was done with you and got another job?

Aside from all that, the next album should help us see if they have broken the rut or not. I hope they have, and I hope Portnoy breaks his rut too and comes out of this a better and happier person and musician. Either way, I'm not gonna be bitter towards them if their next album doesn't blow me away the way Images & Words did. In fact that's impossible because I heard that at a time almost 20 years ago now, when they were different than most other bands on the scene. That initial impression can never happen again, and it's nobody's fault.
