I dont think either of them are over rated. Although I don't like Vai or Yngwie, there is no questioning their talent. Satriani on the other hand to me is a god.

Wasnt saying they were over rated, those were in response to the post right above that post.

Everyone is inspired by someone. Just because he inspired doesnt mean he should get all the credit. If that were the case then whoever whistled the first tune in the garden of Eden should be the rock god.

Not so simple a question because different people rate differently. Some rate a guitarist by his speed some for his technical proficiency while others his song writing capabilities. I agree on Hammett , Fast pentatonics wow any bar band hack can play that stuff. Hendrix you gotta remember was the 60's so he was doing crazy stuff for that time period. Now he wouldnt be considered wow but then yes. EVH cmon he was great for his time too . The 70's the 70's .

              Joe Satriani.

Never have I heard such bland tone and soloing be praised so highly. He is a phenomenal musician no doubt, he knows his shit, he's a great teacher, he's a good song writter, but his solo's are uninspiring and very bland.

Not hating, because I do like a few of his songs, but the amount of praise he gets is ridiculous.

George Lynch. Boring boring boring. Boring rhythm, boring tone, soul-less solos and from what I saw of his instructional DVD, he has the personality of a beansprout...

But it's all subjective - plenty of people seem to love his playing, so what do I know?
Popular is not the same as good
Rare is not the same as valuable
Worth is what someone will pay, not what you want to get

See I like Lynch. So its all individual taste I guess ,Lynch has good tone and a sorta unique style.

Exactly, historical perspective is key when looking at Hendrix or Clapton and their reps. In their time they were outside the box; today they are way inside the box but remember that Hendrix died 40 years ago. And the same for EVH, though there WERE better players around even in his time, like Uli Roth to name just one, Scorpions were not well known in the states until years after Van Halen hit big. So people who have been listening to Paul Gilbert and Marty Friedman for decades have no real conception that there was a time before guitarists like that were ever heard of.

I can think of several "guitar heroes" that I don't think are nearly as good as everyone hypes them up to be... If we all liked the same thing, how fucking boring would that be? :dunno:

                              Kurt Cobain; 4 note wonder.
Kirk Hammett; Solos are incredibly predictable.
Zakk Wylde; Where do I start?
Dimebag Darrell; Amazing musician but not the guitar god everyone says he is
                              Dave Mustaine; Same thing.

I can't really think of anyone else right now.

What? Jimi is sounds outside-of-the-box now more than ever, what guitarists today are writing songs like "1983" or "Third Stone From The Sun" or doing such an experimental production as on Electric Ladyland.
