I just finished re-sawing a plank of this into fret boards. The guy I got it off said he thought it was some kind of rosewood, but it's very light coloured for Brazilian or even Indian rosewood. I haven't found much info on it, but I've heard of "blonde rosewood" and seen a picture that looks remarkably similar. It's extremely dense, with a bold grain, and open pores like most rosewood. It's very easy to work with, and cuts cleanly without splintering. This picture is one of the fret boards I just made, and is super smooth after just planing to thickness.
So, Rosewood, or something else?
