Tommy, Hopkins considered Albert Finney to be the best of their generation, I think Albert does have a bit bigger range due playing in a lot of not so well known flicks.

The most versatile actor I've ever seen is Vittorio Gassman, about 130 films from 40's until 2000 and also one of the greatest theater actors in 20th century. He wasn't just versatile, he was simply incredible in every genre. He's praised for being a great comedian as much as for his fantastic Shakesparean roles on the stage. The only oscar that Pacino won was for his role in Scent of a Woman, and even though as great as Al is, Gassman was miles ahead in the original version.

Adam Sandler made some very silly comedies in the 90's which weren't serious at all and could be laughed at for it's stupidity. I had no problem watching him portraying some douche bag doing retarded jokes which little kids do, I dad many similar things when I was 12.
But since "The Wedding Singer" he has become more and more annoying. Trying to make flicks with "meaning" while still being a retard. Click is one of the worst movies I've seen in recent years, not because of it's "humour" but because of the "you should spend more time with your family" message and specially how it was delivered. Absolutely the worst kind of film-making. Making everything so obvious and plain.

another guy who is out of this fukking world is
Geoffrey Rush. He can do anything. Want to get blown away?
Watch him in the movie "Shine" and in the movie "Quills" about the marquis de sade.
      he was fantastic.

Great thread. I agree with previous nominees. I'll add the newcomer Shia LaBeouf. Why do people like this kid? He is cast for action flims but it looks like my 8 year daughter could kick his ass. Also cast as a love interest for Megan Fox? Really? I just don't get it.

Man, tough crowd! I agree that a lot of the above actors are in way too many bad movies or act badly in them....but this is not real life but movieland where there is no common sense.

I'll comment only on Arnold. Yeah, he's no DeNiro, but sometimes a good movie is made, if at least accidentally. If I came across Predator while channel surfing, it stays there til the end! Can't get enough of that one.

Lots of common ground on this thread. We all seem to expect talent and great performances in movies........and music. The masses choose to accept far less. mediocrity sucks balls.

for Oldman, check out Sid and Nancy

I love Oldman. one of my favorites. he's english, so is Hopkins, all the best actors seem to come from england.
              Fuck. Ing. Hell.
Are you trying to start an International Diplomatic Incident? Hopkins is WELSH, ie. from WALES, not English. If Auntie Shobs had read this, well, he'd be very annoyed, and might even write a sternly worded protest. Then where would we be? Jeez, you really should be more careful.

              They shag sheep in Wales.

Oh, and Sid & Nancy is wank, utter wank. Nothing to do with Oldman, it just pisses me off that they changed Sid's T-shirt from his usual Swastika to a Hammer & Sickle. That's just pandering to the PC brigade, if you are going to do a biopic, keep it real-ish. The main reason it's shit though, and I defy anyone from the UK to disagree, is that Johnny Rotten appears to be played by Les fucking Dennis. Go on Britons, watch it and tell me I'm wrong. You can't can you? Les fucking Dennis, sheeeeesh.
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

A rare case where the sequel was better than the original. Predator 2 was WAY the fuck better than the first one.

First off, P2 had NO Fucking Arnold in it.

next, P2 had a much better storyline.

did I mention that P2 had no arnold in it? it ruled on that fact alone

Gary busey is a far better actor than arnold, and movies with asshole FBI agents are generally pretty good.

P2 was just way the fuck cooler.

arnold is just shitty. period. terrible. I would have rather had fuckin PEE WEE HERMAN play the terminator than that useless talentless fucking arnold.

                        I dig Clooney... very versatile.
He can do serious drama , bad ass action type, and comedy and do it well.
And of all of them, Comedy is the hardest to pull off. You can fake serious, you can't fake funny. You either are or you aren't.

As for Arnold.... meh... he's great for mindless action movies. He can't do comedy or drama to save his life. Kindergarten Cop, Twins... need I say more?
Utter wastes of film and money.

If you go into watching one of his action movies with the right expectations, they can be decent.
                        T-2 was his best.
Predator... "Get to the choppa!!!" was pretty cool for a blood and guts flick. Shitty acting all around. Mr. Jesse "I ain't got time to bleed." Ventura sucked worse than Arnold.

I think most people among the "masses" can appreciate good acting it's just they are exposed to a lot of crappy movies which contain crappy acting and they have no idea that there's much better stuff out there. Most people aren't film fanatics, during their free time they just go out and watch whatever is playing at the cinema and what has been advertised a lot. A lot of people among "the masses" actually don't like a lot of the crappy movies but cinema isn't very important for them so they don't seek out for better crafted flicks. It's the same with music. A lot of people aren't into wasting ridiculous amounts of time discovering musicians with incredible feel and tone like we do, music isn't very important for them, just a simple entertainment.
But the thing which is done well with a lot of the crappy movies is advertisement. Hollywood and North American entertainment generally is absolutely the best when it comes to selling a product, hands down!
A lot of big budget movies actually don't have that big of a budget for production, often half of that money goes into promotion. Huge amounts of money is spent to promote the movies.
Even all the Friedberg and Seltzer flicks (Date Movie, Epic Movie, Meet the Spartans etc.) make a lot of money worldwide. Most people don't like those movies but they still make money because they are advertised so well.

Rush is an Aussie but yes totally amazing.
Australia does have pretty much the same acting method "school" as in England though.

Some actors or actresses suck when their role is in another socio-linguistic context. For example Penélope Cruz in english language flicks is usually pretty dreadful but when she works at home with great Spanish directors she can be pretty awesome like in Almodóvar's flicks, specially in "Volver".
