Tommy, Hopkins considered Albert Finney to be the best of their generation, I think Albert does have a bit bigger range due playing in a lot of not so well known flicks.
The most versatile actor I've ever seen is Vittorio Gassman, about 130 films from 40's until 2000 and also one of the greatest theater actors in 20th century. He wasn't just versatile, he was simply incredible in every genre. He's praised for being a great comedian as much as for his fantastic Shakesparean roles on the stage. The only oscar that Pacino won was for his role in Scent of a Woman, and even though as great as Al is, Gassman was miles ahead in the original version.
Adam Sandler made some very silly comedies in the 90's which weren't serious at all and could be laughed at for it's stupidity. I had no problem watching him portraying some douche bag doing retarded jokes which little kids do, I dad many similar things when I was 12.
But since "The Wedding Singer" he has become more and more annoying. Trying to make flicks with "meaning" while still being a retard. Click is one of the worst movies I've seen in recent years, not because of it's "humour" but because of the "you should spend more time with your family" message and specially how it was delivered. Absolutely the worst kind of film-making. Making everything so obvious and plain.
