  • Randy Rhoads > Van Halen

In my opinion, Randy Rhoads is better than Edward Van Halen.

    1. Mastery of the Other's Material: Randy was a guitar teacher. Prior to joining Ozzy, he was constantly asked by his students to teach them VH licks and riffs, and in those days, you would have to learn by ear-especially if you're a guitar teacher. Randy had good recall, or the ability to replay something after hearing it only once or twice, whereas Eddie, by his own admission, had to actually slow down Eric Clapton's simple solos to learn them. (I couldn't see Eddie learning Randy's solos in Mr. Crowley.)

    2. Emotionally Captivating: It is said that when Beethoven performed his compositions for an audience, he would play with enough conviction and passion to bring his listeners to tears. When I hear Randy's duet with the piano on the Tribute version of Revelation Mother Earth, or his solo on Diary of A Madman, I get chills down my spine. Eddie has yet to grow beyond his juvenile "wow" factor.

    3. Musical Substance: Now, although Eddie has a certain energy to his playing, once you peer past the smoke and the mirrors, a more intellectually stimulating side to Eddie's composing is non-existent. Take away the tapping, the harmonics, distortion, and the whammy from Ed, and you're left with Clapton and Chuck Berry rip-offs. Take away those same things from Randy, and you still have really amazing musical ideas.

Its all subjective really. Randy got me playing. I found Van Halen. Loved him, too. Comparing them ,because their styles are so different, it like comparing apples to oranges.

Both are blues based, however, I see Randy as a more refined or technical player as he blended alot of classical music into it. His note placement seemed to have a pre-redetermined purpose, where Eddie seems like a " shoot from the hip" kind of player.

Unfortunately, we never got to see where Randy was going to take his music. Was that his best riffs and writing on those two albums? Would we have seen better? Who knows. Keep in mind, quite a bit of Randy's stuff with Ozzy was recycled material from his Quiet Riot days.

Best advice is to enjoy these two great players for their own unique style and what they have done and continue to do for guitarists. -Lou

No, Eddie is better because I say so, and unlike your subpar analysis I have mathematical calculations to prove it, because we got into the "who has a bigger dick, more HPs in a car and faster at 100m sprint" thing right? Let me know when you are ready to talk about music as an art form.

Is Hendrix better than Rhoads? I am sure millions of people would say yes...

Eddie is better because he is alive. Randy got in a small plane with a coked-out bus driver and he is dead because of it. Bummer, huh?
              Ron is the MAN!!!!

Randy could easily pull off the flashy speed stuff. Here's the proof:

no one is better. They both were (yes, past tense for both) excellent players and refined the way the instrument. Just because I subjectively prefer classical influenced playing over blues based playng does nto make one better than the other. I prefer Randy over Eddie to me.

In my mind of all the post Hendrix players Eddie Van Halen, Randy Rhoads and Yngwie Malmsteen had the most impact on the guitar playing community.

whether or not its good, its better then Randy today.

You just seem sad, and needing to take it on Ed.The worst thing Eddie ever did was fail to improve on the "wow" factor he brought to the table on VH1. Randy has never had that "wow" factor for me, sure, he was a hell of a guitar player. But Eruption is still cool, and nothing Randy has done still sounds that incredible.

You sit 100 idiot-fanboys in a room with guitars, they'll master anybody's playing, be it Randy's, Ed's, Vai's, Petrucci's. Whoever. Randy isn't better just because he could copy Van Halen licks

Wanna hear something interesting? Steve Stevens is better then Eddie OR Randy, while playing with one hand tied behind his balls (pretty uncomfortable stance).

See, now that made you mad because you are trying to take internet revenge for a guy who died almost 30 years ago. And sorry Bub, but people have been doing it for years, you are not bringing anything new to the table.

Yes, its a bummer Randy died, but until somebody clones him, he's not coming back, so get over it and quit crying,.

                        1. I'd rather listen to Randy's silence today than that heap of crap Eddie played for a PAYING audience.

                        2. I am not sad. I am angry that clowns like Eddie and the Jonas brothers have long careers while the subtle, fleeting genius of Randy goes unnoticed by the average non-musician. (At least he died in a way in a way that wasn't embarrasing. I mean, Elvis had a heart attack while taking a dump and Jim Morrison died while masterbating.)

3.I have no idea who Vai, Petrucci, Steve Stephens or any other dime-a-dozen shredders are. I'd rather listen to this guy than most electric players anyway:

on the Contrary, Steve Stevens, is not your "Dime-a-dozen" shredder, but a true master of the instrument. and I would take Stevens over ANYONE mentioned in this thread...

also, you must get over the fact that clowns ALWAYS make it bigger then guys like Randy, regardless of talent level.

when Eddie came through, he made a tidal wave. Randy, on the other hand was nothing but a ripple afterwards unfortunately, and he owes his fame as a rock guitarist to guys like Eddie.

If you want to get pissy about someone, get pissy at Jimmy Page, who not only was a completely average guitar player, but also a thief when it comes to songs
