I originally read this thread in the morning and was going to pipe-in to say I loved both players, but while I think Randy was a more skilled and technically proficient player, I personally connected more emotionally with EVH's body of work (within the same era - in the late 70's / Early 80's) and would listen to VH about 4x more frequently than Ozzy because of the connection I felt to the music.

When I compare Eddie to the Jonas Brothers, I meant in terms of compositional level. I highly doubt either of them even knows what a circular progression is. (Obviously Eddie has more skill than them.)

I'm not saying I hate Eddie, or that I think he sucks. I just think he is way overrated, while Randy is way underrated.
(Either way, though, Akira Takasaki is my favorite. Randy is my second favorite, and Eddie is probably number six or seven.)

It is possible to get an idea of what direction Randy would have gone in. In an interview, Don Airey said that he and Randy were working out ideas for the third album when he died, and that many of those ideas found their way onto his K2 Album.

Having sex with men might be your idea of a good time, but for me its hearing music that moves me.

I would also like to mention that I have perfect pitch. When I hear Randy, it just "sounds" right-sort of like when a person speaks a gramatically correct sentence. When I hear Eddie, it sounds "off" to my ear, comparable to someone using "ain't" or double negatives when they talk (example- "I don't got nothing." I cringe when I hear music like this, which is why I cringe during so much of Eddie's stuff.)
