Newc, I guess you're talking about your computer(s) at work? On the homefront, where you can do whatever you want, the stuff you're going bananas over is a non-issue. It's so simple to turn off that I've forgotten it after installing Win7 years ago.

Nope, home PC. The computers at werk still use XP. Might snag the serial off one of their cases when I go back tomorrow and try to go back to XP.

I don't run as an Administrator, and I leave UAC on. On the rare occasion where I need to change something that requires Administrator permission, I give the Administrator password. What's the big deal? :dunno:

Same here. From the reading I did, it's mostly just patches that have already come out with regular updates, but there was supposedly a bug fix for some hdmi audio problem. One dude on another forum was bitching that his available RAM went way down, but that's the only complaint I've heard. Mine is exactly the same as it was.

Ill give you a piece of advice about running programs in compatibility mode in 7 NewC. When you first install the program, Windows may try to suggest that you install with recommended setting, dont do it. Tell windows it installed correctly. After that, right click on the shortcut on the desktop, choose properties, choose the compatibility tab, then choose the latest version of XP in the drop down menu. Ive found this is the best course of action 99% of the time. Using the "install using recommended settings" generally causes problems. Just use the compatibility mode in the properties menu and you should be just fine. However, with UAC turned on it will warn you every time you open the application. UAC is easy to turn off and for those that say you shouldnt, well XP didnt have it and most of us survived.

I run Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit, XP pro 32 and 64 bit, and Linux. I had Vista Ultimate 64. In fact, I still have it in the package, just not installed anymore. Vista wasn't bad, really,.......as long as you had 64 Bit running a quad core and 8 GB or RAM.....other than that little hurdle.

I like 7 alot. Just got to shut down the sillyness. I just think that people got ripped by the Vista/7 fiasco. It should have been a free upgrade to anyone with Vista......not just those that bought a PC in a certain time frame. I was off by a week, so they would not upgrade me for free, or even a discount........their rep said I could spend a few hundred dollars more to get 7 after I just bought Vista a couple months before. I told him I would just pirate it for free. So, I did. Works just fine and gets all the updates. -Lou

I have windows XP SP2. I was warned not to install SP3. My dad has Vista and W7, and doesn't have any of the problems you mention.

There are SOME programs that 7 just doesnt support well yet. Some freeware is still in its 7 infancy and some a/v editing software isnt fully compatible yet. For instance, the Audacity version for Vista/7 is still beta (has been for 3 years)and somewhat unreliable, but the Xp version runs reasonably well in compatibility mode though the Audacity site recommends the beta version for 7. I have to have both now because once you open an Audacity project in the beta version it is no longer compatible with the XP version. So, heads up, if you use Audacity with Win 7, install the XP version.

Thats correct. It will only tell you after the install has finished. Like I said, when prompted, tell 7 that you believe the program installed correctly by clicking that option. As far as an unknown publisher, turn UAC off and you shouldnt have that issue any longer.

Yeah, you really shouldn't, and you shouldn't run as an Administrator.

But, people hate the inconvenience, so they choose to make Vista/7 no safer than XP by running as an Administrator and disabling UAC, so they can spend their Saturday reinstalling Windows after they get rooted instead of clicking UAC dialogs once or twice a day.

Ive visited many an unsavory site and I have yet get infected with 7 or XP. I guess Im an exception??

Ah, well for the most part if you aren't dumb and downloading cracked software and stuff and with a little luck you'll be OK, sure.

The ones that get my attention are stuff like that GDI buffer overrun crap... Execute code embedded in a GIF/JPEG? Get owned by displaying a picture in your browser... That's gotta make a guy feel pretty safe. You know how long that was out in the wild before anyone found it/detected it? A LONG time.

So let me put it this way... If you are relying on your anti-virus to tell you that you are not infected, well, all it can tell you is if you are infected with anything it knows about.
