My oldest son is starting a band, seeking advice

I've been doing the "band" thing for so long and I don't remember how it all started out.

So I need some help, my 16 years old, playing bass, is starting out a band and I'm looking for advice. Sometimes he listens more when it's not coming from his old daddy!

They are all decent musicians 1 guit/bass/drums. Lead vocal will be a girl. So any songs they should be trying to learn, basic rock'n roll tunes that are fun to play?

Any ideas? The Donnas, Joan Jett, Cranberries??? He asked me about helping him choosing some songs? Paramore??? I don't even know who they are, will have to youtube them tonite! :think:

He already knows some parts of GnR's Sweet Child so this one could be sang by girl.

What kind of music are your son and his bandmates into?

Assuming that the girl singer sings at a higher register than most males, maybe something like "Free Falling" by Tom Petty? Some Roy Orbison tunes?

I'm not really aware of music that has been released within the past 10 years or so though... I'm a middle aged man who doesn't like "new" things

The Donna's would be good. Jet, Blondie are others. Journey would be good as well. Think about Separate Ways or Stone in Love. Paramore would be good if they really want to push themselves. That singer has a damn good range. Maybe some Evanescence as well if you they want to push themselves. Something to strive for.

If they are looking for stuff to cover and have a female singer, have them check out The Rockfords. Pretty pop/rock versus heavy but still good guitar based rock. It's an old side project of Mike McCready from Pearl Jam. The singer needs to be able to belt it out to keep up with Carrie Akre.

Dokken. She should be able to do those easily, especially the ballads. Oh wait, they were all ballads.

Definitely Joan Jett, though she's gonna need some grit to her voice to rock it.

Heart. Usually pretty simple stuff.

A couple of more "recent" ones I always thought would go over well with a female singer are EnVogue's Free Your Mind and Atlantis Marmoset's You Oughta Know (before she went total fucking hippiebitch). But there again, the singer's gotta have the right voice. If she doesn't, then she should stick with the Heart stuff.

There's plenty of Classic Rock stuff. Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Rush, Zeppelin, Boston, DAMN what is that fucking chick's name Lee Arron that's it. Fuck I've been sitting here trying to think of it but all I get is "LeeAnn someshit"

What kind of music are your son and his bandmates into?

The issue with his band is that they all like different styles of music. My son is more into prog-rock/metal à la "Dream Theater"/"Iron Maiden" but his skills are still of the level of basic rock and blues tunes with a few chord changes.

He played a few tunes with us at our last gig and he can keep up with a band! Daddy was very proud.

I won't take the decision for him but tonite we'll sit down together and listen to a few tunes from your suggestion above and see what he likes. But luckily, he's very open minded when it comes to music, so he should be able to pick a few tunes and then share them with his bandmates.
