I wish I could get that out of my head when I see it. Every time, I laugh.

As for Alexander, I've seen part of it, again on telly when nothing else was on. It seemed OK, even though I'm fairly sure Alexander's army weren't a load of Paddies. I keep expecting Mrs Doyle to pop up and ask if they want a cup of tea. ("Gwan, g'wan, g'wan") I recall the film seemd endless...
I will watch it properly when it's on again.

Actually, I'd no real clue who Colin Farrel was until I'd seen this, and he didn't make me think "What a twat" so when I saw "Miami Vice" was on telly... I did give it atry. Now, that was watchable, but the same applies as before with other re-makes - why bother?

Oh, I thought "Troy" wasn't too bad either.

Now, see the kind of films I like - historic, lots of fighting, preferably with swords. Yet still I saw only one of those at the cinema, the reason being that i expected them all to be shite. If movie studio PR and researchers saw further than their own office wall, they'd take note of why people like me still don't get a hardon for films that are right up my street, let alone other ones that might appeal.
What other industry whinges about being in decline, but doesn't actually find out WHY the cutomers are not spending? No other industry, I reckon. Fuck 'em, they deserve to all go bust if they are too arrogant to find out what people want, long-term.

Oh man, "Sweeney!" is on telly now, I fucking love that film, and the series (apart from all the Jaguars they prang, that makes me feel a little sick).

I believe a re-make of that is in progress. It might just tip me over the edge...

Gladiator had some pretty heavy CGI going on... specially compared to Alejandro Amenábar's "Agora" which had actual massive sets built on Malta. Other than that Gladiator was slightly better than average sword and sandal flick with too black-and-white good vs. bad characters.

Every generation complains about something new while glorifying the past. Truth is, there's massive amounts of crap produced in every decade although some decades are brighter than the others. Last three decades have been fucking horrible compared to 60's and 70's because 60's and 70's were the eras when modern cinema was new, fresh and full of innovations while in the late 70's all boundaries were broken and massive pussification started again just like decades earlier. First decades of filmmaking were full of innovations but after the 30's everything went downhill specially in Hollywood with the mandatory christian family values and political correctness program aka the Hayes code.

I don't care about what all those hacks are trying to make. There's so many great things made before we were born and in every corner of earth.

Instead of giving shit about what some hacks are doing let's celebrate the 80th birthday of 3 most influential gangster flicks.

"The Public Enemy" by William A. Wellman
"Little Caesar" by Mervyn LeRoy

All great and from '31, before the pussification code.

The thing is with the massive amounts of CGI in Gladiator is that it does the job it should do, in a credible way. If it were possible to build a massive Colisseum set and use thousands of extras, in a similar way to the "War & Peace" you mentioned earlier, that'd be great, but CGI is the perfect substitute - surely this is how it should be used, almost so you don't realise it. When a film plasters it everywhere, it doesn't impress me, it just kills the effect when it has to be used. Overkill, it's more than a good Motorhead LP.

I don't necessarily think that the good old days were that good, plenty of "classics" could do with a fucking good re-write and re-shooting!!
I was told the recent "True Grit" would be agreeable to me, despite me refusing point blank to see anyone other than John Wayne as Rooster Cogburn. Those old westerns were dire in reality, 6 guns which never need re-loading etc. I'm not totally a miserable old bastard, some of those old films are just as shit as the Hulk et al.

If anything I should be really excited about CGI and state of the art effects, they could make some incredible films without making them ridiculous.

I'll take your recommendations, see which of those I can find. Fucking hell, if I say that when I think of "Scarface" I think of someone getting chainsawed up in a motel room, does that invalidate my argument about re-makes?

I enjoy the original Conan movie to this day, even though it doesn't hold a candle to the novels as far as story or character. Unfortunately it appears the new movie seems to be a "reboot" of the original movie rather than trying to bring the novels to life.

Conan is a Cimerrian, which in Hyborian earth was supposed to be in the Black Sea/Ukraine region and his people's enemies were Picts (Scots) and Vanir (Danes/Vikings). Conan had black hair but light colored eyes. I have a hard time seeing a Samoan looking dude and thinking "Conan".

Anyway, I'll check it out when it's on one of the free movie channels. (It shouldn't be much more than 2-3 months. I would bet it's on video same time as Spy Kids 4D.)

I wish Hollywood would stop f***ing up every memorable movie from the 80s. I just saw a commercial for a new version of 'Fright Night'. WTF?! Come up with some new ideas instead of recasting classics, and turning them into utter crap.
