It seems everyone in New Mexico "packs." That's one of the reasons I got my CCW. My Walther is the perfect size and relatively comfortable. People rag on the .380 round, but ammo companies have spiced up the rounds so that they have plenty of potential. Like I told one shooting buddy, "why don't you stand down range and tell me if this hurts!"

One thing I do recommend and that is if you carry a full size weapon plus a backup piece, do yourself a favor and stay with the same caliber.

      People mistake clealiness for reliability.

A well lubricated weapon will run and run and run and run regardless of carbon buildup. Glock's are almost self-cleaning in a way, since any debris I ever manage to build up is removed from the weapon as it cycles. Usually, a few drops of EWL down the slide rails and the feed ramps is all it needs. Hardly a "cleaning" if you ask me!

Yes, and it was retardedly expensive. If I could do it again, I'd pick up another SR-15 and call it a day.

I have a Judge that I keep in my truck. It's loaded with .45 Colt and Winchester Critical Defense .410 rounds. Fucker "bites" like a sonofabitch when you squeeze off .410 ammo.

Hey Bill, I think it's winchester that makes an ammo pack especially designed for The Judge. It's called "The Jury" and consists of 5 rounds of .410 and 5 rounds of .45 Colt. Both companies, S&W and Taurus, have made their guns so light, that firing the .410 round is quite the adventure. My gun shoots the 3 inch shitshells. One thing is for sure, I'd hate to discharge that fucker from inside a car. You'd be so deaf that you'd think Dave Mustaine actually does sing good!

                      Thanks for the info SEEGEE!!!!!

I've been wanting to buy one of these for a while. I can't wait to squeeze off a few .410 BOOOOMS in the palm of my hand! My stainless Horton 629 snub stings like a fuggin' bitch with the wood combats grips on but I don't want to change them because it looks pretty!

But Judge or the Gov..thats a beauty to have for a grab N go piece,,for the house..car..neighborhood. It should be a required thing to carry in Cleveland. So we can protect ourselves from ALL THE CLEVELANDERS!!!

                      Cleveland = POOP!!!

What do you want to use it for? Home defense, concealed carry, target, all of the above? If all of the above, which is most important?

Are you the only user or will there be others? Are you a big or little guy? Big or little hands? How about the other user? How much time can you convince the other user to practice and learn about the gun?

How often will you go shooting (if not a lot, who cares how expensive the ammo is).

Basically every caliber you mentioned is acceptable for home defense and carry, although I would not buy a .38 but instead would buy a .357, which can chamber and fire .38 no problem but can also go magnum if you want the extra power.

No reason IMO to do a lot of shooting with the Luger. That's a collectors piece number one
and number two I don't know that the more modern high pressure/velocity 9mm is going to be very good for it.

They can go for big bucks depending on a lot of little arcane things (just like guitars) and there is a very active collectors market for them.
Home Defense and Target. Concealed carry is a ways down the road. Home Defense most important.

Whole family may use it. Medium (5'9", 220lbs). Medium hands (I can prefer shredder necks but can handle a Gibson R8). Other hands will be small.

I agree about the .357 over the .38. I like flexible ammo choices.

The first gun I purchased was a coach gun in 2004 because I had neighbor issues at the old house. Only fired it once when I purchased it. It's nickel coated and made in Brazil. Can't remember the name. Next gun I bought 2004 was a Henry .22 repeater. Both of these sat unused for 7 years.

My dad passed away this year and left me the Luger and a Mauser Rifle. I've only gone shooting a handful of times. Some of these were 20 years ago. He never took me shooting. I decided not to be an ass so I took my sons (12 and 16) shooting.

The kids had fun firing the 22 Henry. No issues there.

The Luger was a PITA. It's in new shape (My dad purchased it in 1966 and most likely never fired it). The spring is very strong in it. From what I read, I need higher power NATO rounds. The regular 9mm stuff isn't powerful enough to cycle the chamber (don't know if my terminology is right but it sounds good) and the spent cartridge would be caught and would jam the gun. Out of 100 rounds, maybe 10 didn't jam.

So it would be nice to get a reliable handgun. I know this most likely means a revolver, but I just don't like the look.

DRM said 1911. I've heard those are pretty good.

Thanks for all the info so far guys. Keep it coming. Some people say go to a gun show to purchase guns?

I had a Judge, but it was stolen in the home burglary earlier this year. The ammo choices can be scary. The disc shredder rounds are badass. Awesome home defense gun. I call it the "hallway clearer".

Not all 1911's are created equal. Google "1911Forum" and do some homework if you choose to go that route. Invest in good mags and insure the pistol has been inspected by a competent gunsmith and that it operates within certain tolerances. Most mid-priced 1911's take some voodoo to get running well, but once you do, they're sweet.

I'm telling you...if you're a new gun owner, just go get a Glock. Check out the new models with the interchangable backstraps for the grip. All you need is a Glock 19 and a Surefire X300 weapon light and you have a great, versatile pistol that can serve both home defense, CCW, and target duties with ease. The odds are that you will only use a weapon in self defense one time in your life. Why gamble? If you can't deal with the stigma surrounding Glock's, then pick up a Smith & Wesson M&P 9mm or a used HK USP or a new P30/P2000.

Don't buy into the bullshit surrounding "stopping power". I have absolutely no idea what that means, but I can tell you that a 9mm will kill you. Period. If you want to use a shotgun, go buy a Remington 870 12ga and keep it fed with 00 buck. I dare you to use a .410 on something other than a mean paper target or a watermelon in a magazine ad. Do some research on the use of .410's in self-defense and you'll understand why a lot of us laugh at them. A good source to study about ballistics are the posts made by a user named DocGKR. Google him.

Remember: shot placement is everything. Aim center mass and strive for consistency. Practice your draw if you plan to CCW and practice low-light/no-light shooting with a flashlight if it's a nightstand gun. There's a whole lot more to shooting someone than point-click. And make sure you always have atleast one extra magazine, always.

If you want, PM me and I'll send you some links to various expert sources on CCW and home defense techniques.

Not to start a pissing match, but here's the first hit I got on Google for terminal ballistics of .410.
