Handgun gurus: Need some input

Well, for my concealed carry I primarily carry either a Springfield Champion LW in 45ACP or a Colt Officers ACP in you guessed it, 45ACP. The bedroom house pistol is a Glock 19 in 9mm primarily because if the wife God forbid would ever have to grab it and I weren't home all she has to do is point and pull the trigger. The house gun is a Remington 870 Wingmaster in 12 gauge loaded with buckshot. Yes, all my carry and house guns are loaded. A couple of wise men (my Gramps and father in law) always said a gun that isn't loaded will get you killed.
I have owned a Sig P6 in 9mm that was Made in Germany and it was a fine gun, but it was used as trade bait for the Colt Officers ACP as I had $325 in it and the local gun store offered me $400 for it. I used to own a Glock 22 in 40 S&W, but honestly after at least a thousand rounds through that gun I just couldn't make myself like 40 S&W. As previously stated, the Glock 19 is a great handgun and has performed flawlessly for me through the 3,000 or so rounds I've put through it.
I won't even try hollow points in any pistol I own until they get at least a 500 round range break in. I also will not carry a pistol that will not feed hollow points. Once the break in period is over and one won't eat hollow points it goes to Springfield Armory for any work I need. Springfield Armory's repair is top notch and their customer service is second to none in my experience.
My round of choice is 45ACP and that's why my concealed carry pistols are in that round. 9mm is much more economical to shoot. A year and a half ago I traded the Glock 22 that I put $375 in on a Taurus PT1911 in yet again 45ACP. Having heard a lot of the negatives about Taurus I went into that one with eyes wide open and believe it or not it's hands down been my most reliable 1911 and most accurate. Yes, I'm a sucker for a 1911.
I also have a Ruger P-90 in 45ACP and a Colt Trooper MkIII in 357Mag and I like those as well. I also have a Made in Spain Walther PPK knock-off that I hate but it was given to me by a relative so it's hard to complain about it. A lot of good choices have been recommended. If I were looking for a pistol for my wife to carry then I and she would be looking for something in the 380, 38 Special or 9mm range. A Glock 19 or Springfield XD would be where my money would go.
On a side note, anyone else other than me trying the Civilian Marksmanship Program roulette on trying to get a M1903/A3 or M1917? They received my order yesterday, but because of the limited stock I doubt I get anything. I've been jonesing for a M1903 for a long time as I just dig old battle rifles, and I do hope I get one to go with my Springfield M1 Garand.

I really don't have a clue as to the reason you'd pick a 9mm or a .40 or a .45 or a .38, or any of the other reasons you'd pick one gun over another.
I have a 1936 German Luger I inheritted, so should I stick to 9mm guns to save money on ammo by having only one choice of round?
I usually hear a Sig is a very good gun. I have a Sig bb gun and like the feel of it.
Help? I go into a pawn or gun shop and see all these guns and don't have a clue. I guess it would be the same kind of story if I was a gun collector looking for a first guitar.

The only higher powered 9mm rounds I know of are the Walmart +P hollowpoint rounds. $20 for a box a 20 is steep, but I'd like to see it go through a complete clip without jamming. The jamming takes the fun out of it.

Guess I should have learned my lesson when I used to buy high dollar custom shop guitars. Last two custom 1911s I bought, I would have been better off pissing my money off at the strip club. I am looking real hard at the new Ruger and the new Colt Centennial. I love the looks of the Remington R1 but I heard it was a dog.
On the topic of CCW, I got my new permit in the mail today and I look like one of Charles Manson's followers. That tells me right there that ANYONE can get a permit!"POOP"

Also, it may need a detail strip, clean and lube. If it's that fresh of an old piece there's good chance you've got some dried cosmoline hanging it up. Also, you'd be surprised at how many times a clip needing cleaned/slightly lubed will cause failure to feed/failure to ejects.Last edited by Razor; 10-05-2011, 09:57 PM.

Wow DRM... I don't even.... so many contradictions and misconceptions I wouldn't even know where to begin.
A glock for a girl for a first handgun purchase? Yeah, I guess that would work fine, if she was a man. Or a burly girl with man-hands... Don't get me going on your whole reliability/quality issues with Sig, HK, Colt, etc... you're all over the map.
Sorry, don't mean to personally insult you or single you out, but I disagree with so much that you've said... The only thing I didn't see you say that if it's not milspec then it's garbage. But from reading your opinions... Sorry, not trying to be an ass, guess I can't help it. lol
Sixx, have your GF go to a gun shop and have her hold as many small and mid size handguns as she can... the most important quality the firearm MUST have is comfort. The second, natural aim. I would suggest starting her on a Walther P99, S&W M&P, consider the Kahrs, possibly a P228...
As for buying used... check for gun boards that are in your neck of the woods. You're more likely to find a reasonable price on a forum, if not look for a shop that has a lot of used/consignment pistols. Also a gun shop with rentals and shooting lanes are a must. Try before you buy. Definitely find her something that fits in her hand well because if she's not comfortable while shooting it, she probably won't enjoy it as much and an uncomfortable firearm as your first doesn't help getting her out to the range as often.

It's all good Xenophobe. Opinions are like assholes and all that happy shit.
However, I will say this: I guarantee I put more rounds down range in two weeks than the vast majority of shooters do in a year. I depend on shooting for a living. I have very strong opinions, but they are backed up with years of professional experience, both in the military and competitive shooting.
Take my advice for what it is. It can piss you off all it wants. I honestly couldn't care less if your ignorance gets you killed.Last edited by DRM; 10-06-2011, 11:43 AM.

Xenophobe's recommendations about a gun shop and a range are good advice. I would also say look at Kel Tec, the Ruger LCR and the Smith & Wesson Bodyguards too for your girlfriend.
