I think with 7 strings, detuning, etc. becoming popular in the last 10 to 15 years, there has more perception of overall preference for heavier string gauges. But a lot of pros still use light gauge strings and play great. Billy Gibbons and Tony Iommi are a couple that come to mind. There was a thread on some forum praising light gauge strings and it listed a lot of pros who use light gauge strings. It is surprising how many use 9s, 8s, and even lighter like Gibbons and Iommi.

I use 105 gauge bass strings on my guitars...it's sounds ...FUCKED UP!"Bill, Smoke a Bowl and Crank Van Halen I, Life is better when I do that"
Donnie Swanstrom 01/25/06..miss ya!

I looked up Billy Gibbons' string gauges: 7-9-11-20-30-38. Dunlop has a signature set with those gauges:

Tony Iommi uses:
For the D# tuning,
.008p, .008p, .011p, .018w, .024w, .032w.
For the C# tuning,
.009p, .010p, .012p, .020w, .032w, .042w.

But what Tony Iommi uses is listed in the post right above yours. He uses a modified set with an 8 for the highest string, but overall the set is much lighter than a standard 8 set. AND he tunes down a half step with that set.

Tony Iommi basically uses light gauge strings for easy bending because he can't even feel the strings with his middle and ring finger since the tips were were cut off in an industrial accident. He wears leather thimbles on those fingers.I feel my soul go cold... only the dead are smiling.
