I know GHS makes the half sizes. I'm not sure if any specific sets come with them from other brands, but you'd probably be able to buy single strings in the certain gauges. http://www.ghsstrings.com/strings/electric/boomers-2

I used them, and they lasted a long time. I really didn't think they were any brighter than the normal Boomers I used.

I am about to order a box with 10 packs of D'addrios.

I tried Ernie Ball and they just feel nasty to me for some reason.

I may try some .008 gauge strings for the hell of it.

You might as well just string up your guitar with your own hair.

I think with 7 strings, detuning, etc. becoming popular in the last 10 to 15 years, there has more perception of overall preference for heavier string gauges. But a lot of pros still use light gauge strings and play great. Billy Gibbons and Tony Iommi are a couple that come to mind. There was a thread on some forum praising light gauge strings and it listed a lot of pros who use light gauge strings. It is surprising how many use 9s, 8s, and even lighter like Gibbons and Iommi.

I looked up Billy Gibbons' string gauges: 7-9-11-20-30-38. Dunlop has a signature set with those gauges:

                  Tony Iommi uses:

                  For the D# tuning,
                  .008p, .008p, .011p, .018w, .024w, .032w.

                  For the C# tuning,
                  .009p, .010p, .012p, .020w, .032w, .042w.

                  A link to more info:

From what I`ve read Tommy Iommi uses 8`s and always has.

edit: Did`nt see Chads post DOH

                      Never heard of Tommy Iommi.

But what Tony Iommi uses is listed in the post right above yours. He uses a modified set with an 8 for the highest string, but overall the set is much lighter than a standard 8 set. AND he tunes down a half step with that set.

I've seen some bands using custom sets so that the 5th string is the same same size or sometimes larger then the 6th and I've thought about trying something like that out

Tony Iommi basically uses light gauge strings for easy bending because he can't even feel the strings with his middle and ring finger since the tips were were cut off in an industrial accident. He wears leather thimbles on those fingers.

Thanks for posting those gauges, Chad. Very interesting. Gibbons is one of my all-time favourite players and I'm shocked at how light that set is! I'd be falling off the board all over the place with those..!

I just ordered 3 packs of 10 gauges D Addarios.

I have always played 9s. I want to see if I play better with tighter strings. Sometimes when I tremolo pick, the strings flop too much.
