I knew I was fighting a losing battle when I had to argue with a few people in regards to who is a better guitar player...
John Mayer or Jeff Beck. .

John Mayer or Jeff Beck. Arguements like that make my head explode.
I do think there is a recent guitar player that really stand out. Guthrie Govan
His tone is a little Eric Johnson but his playing is extremely refreshing.
Regarding recordss.... although its not that recent, I think Opeth's Damnation was extremely unique. Sounds to me like what Pink Floyd would sound like today if they kept writing and evolving. It actually give me a little hope for the music industry.
I wouldn't miss John Mayer concert though, his playing isn't anything special but he has amazing rhythm section, Pino Palladino and Stanley Jordan groove like crazy.

you guys thought I was refering to Jeff Beck when I mentioned that name, but the artist I was talking about is that cat known simply as "Beck". Never understood his music nor could I get into it at all. Some called him a musical genius, I just plain didn't like it.I live on the edge of danger facing life and death every single day.....then I leave her at home and go disarm bombs.

Now a band that never seemed to follow the "norm" that I DID like to listen to was Primus. I don't know why I liked them when I heard them, but a lot of their grooves caught me.I live on the edge of danger facing life and death every single day.....then I leave her at home and go disarm bombs.

I didn't get that from his post. Here is what I think in regards to guitar playing. I think that almost everything that could be done on a guitar has already been done. I think the technology of the guitar would need to change in order to explore new sonic territories.
There have been ground breakers throughout the years but not as many as you would think...
Here are a few..
Les Paul He invented just about everything to do with an electric guitar
Jimmy Hendrix He was responsible for making the electric guitar HEAVY. Fuzz boxes and lots of distortion.
Eddy Van Halen He developed and made popular a completely new way to play the guitar

MB, You are free to start with replacing solos on the last Megadeth albums."There is nothing more fearful than imagination without taste" - Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

POST YOUR OWN PLAYING.
There are also several videos on Youtube.
I think there are a ton of great players out there. There are even more that we will never hear. I will say that there is one player that continually blows me away in regards to tone, feel, and technical ability... Steve Vai. Its REALLY hard to hate the guy and believe me.. I have tried.
He probably can pull more sounds out of a standard full floating Ibanez guitar than anybody on the planet.

However, YOU are saying, well I'm not entirely sure WHAT the fuck you're saying, but it seems to be something along the lines of "no one should play anything that anyone else played before" and "everyone should play weird shit that doesnt entirely fit the backing music". So...please post some examples, as I really dont think anyone knows WTF you are on about. You have such a clear idea of what a virtuoso should do, so let's hear it.
I'm not having a go at your playing skills, I'm having a go because you make no sense.
You dont want to hear the things people have been doing forever?
Well, please show us exactly how we can break free of this.
You want to hear me play better than someone (Broderick) who plays in the usual way - anyone can do that.
I want you to put your money where your mouth is and post something you played that actually shows WTF you mean.
