Prepare for outrage, this is going to be a long thread...
I'll just post what I said elsewhere.
The political ref is to what someone said earlier in that thread.
"I started disliking RS before it was cool to dis them.
That and Guitar Player, and High Fidelity was all I had back in 1979...
Although I liked certain artists back when rock started sliding into oblivion (remember...1979...) I thought their fawning over certain "artists" was quite overbearing and they came off like know-it-all blowhards.
I learned to like VH, Thorogood, Rush, Frank Marino...and learned a lot of the blues from the Delta era thanks to their ignoring what I learned to like.
I still pick up the rag in visitors areas from time to time.
The same with the political divergence.
Hell, Playboy and Penthouse had better editorials in my opinion".
Didnt realize when I posted this that it was effectively spam. Sorry guys, didnt realize wed gone over this already lately.
Well, could have been last year, another board, different magazine or something, I'm not really sure...
But I know these lists and the fact the people who do them most likely never touched a string.
And Kurt Cobain and that White Stripes dude are always on top of the list, however they manage to get there.
Usually these threads lead to discussions who should be there instead and end up in another discussion what "greatest" is actually supposed to mean.
Didn't want to kill the fun, I just had the feeling I've been there before.
I've always said this. To have a fair poll on anything, one must know ALL the players. Even if the players of that list was done by us, it would be far better but not truly accurate..not at all.
Because these lists/polls/ect are compiled of the 1%..while the 99% are ignored, or just unknown by most.
So, this is my Occupy Rolling Stone! I am representing the 99%

Hate to poke, but Jack White is phenomenal. A true genius of our time.
I was just reading the old GW with him and Jimmy Page on the cover. Honestly, I have listened, investigated, some of his work, and in my world he is not. All opinions, tastes, genres, styles, ect aside..maybe I'm missing something. He plays that vintage map guitar. Much like a Mike Varney, dedicated guitar enthusiest, I invested my entire musical life and approx 60K vehemently searching the best players I can, and have. In that scope..he doesn't make the cut.
But if he inspires greatness with any musician, then I say fuck yeah! My son listens to players that don't gel with me, but it does make him a very good player. My kid is playing jazz stuff by ear that I would never imagine playing. So that connection is very important. Obviously, Jack White has that.

Jack is strange, in that I can't just point you in the direction of examples. A little here, little there. Not one to just cram a bunch of talent into one song, or even one album. Yet, not doing bare minimum just to scoot by either. Just pure, 100%, undiluted Rock N' Roll.
I just find his style and prowess refreshing from the midst of thrash mayhem in my standard daily decor.

Don't get me wrong as I'm not a giant fanboi, but if your best guitarist list has Bruce Sprinsteen and NOT Uli Roth, you don't know whaddafug you are talkin' about.
