Audio-Technica ATH-M50 v Beyerdynamic DT100 Headphones

I've been using DT100's for years, but its been suggested these ATH-M50's have a flatter response, making mixing more accurate. Has anyone tried both and found one is better than the other?

DT100 all the way, my hairless little arse-sex slave. My mate tries all kinds of funky shite, like Sennheisers and AT, but nowt he's had feel as nice and comfortable as the Beyers.

What you must remember, my sweet yet bony jizz gargler, is that for your purposes ie. mixing your VengaBoys/Death Metal Atrocity, there is no such thing as making "mixing more accurate", it's all subjective. Whilst you know how much I love the word (and the deed), you must try not to get too anal, my sweetiestudmuffin. Try not to disappear up your own arse.




(BTW, I actually have DT150s but there you go, not much difference.)

You are being a dick now, it's like people who agonise over the difference between Turbosound and Martin Audio - the difference is that one box is blue and the other is black; Mr Joe Public can't hear a fucking iota of difference between the 2. You'll be doing an Eric Johnson next and fwapping over gold jack plugs which you believe will make you sound better.

My "competent response", bearing in mind I run a Pro Audio company with a million pound turnover, (as opposed to doing a bit of recording in my bedroom at Mummy's house) is that you should use what suits the shape of your bonce. Seriously. When you get up into the realms of serious cans like the DT100s or the ATHs, if you can't hear instantly the difference, then there is NO difference, not in the real world, no matter what any cunt in "Recording-Geek-Who-Has-Never-Kissed-A-Real-Girl" Monthly tells you. It's down to brand loyalty and price, IMHO.

I tell you what, my precious - I'll grab a pair of ATs off the rep next time I go out with him on the piss, you can try them out free of charge. I didn't say there were no tonal differences, but that they would be so small as to be insignificant to most people (the remainder being the kind of tosser who thinks that the type of battery in his Distortion pedal, or that gold plated jack plugs affect his tone. It's possible, scientifically, but Joe Public won't ever hear it, even if he tries his hardest to, let alone when he's listening to music on his i-Pud whilst he walks to work)

My first answer was a serious one (as ALL my posts are, you know that, honeybunch) - when you spunk £100+ on a pair of cans, they'd better be fucking comfortable if you want to wear them for long periods, or you won't be able to concentrate. A bit like a ball-gag, you know that.

Some people HAVE to use headphones. When they are hard at work in their studio, laying down some serious METAAAAAL, their Mum comes up and tells them to turn it down because she's trying to watch Coronation Street.

Since they are both closed back monitor headphones they will never be very good for critical mixing or audiophile listening. Therefore which ever set you buy will be missing something from the specturm or have too much at one end of the spectrum (normally bass for closed back cans)

I just went through this search to find the best headphones for my buck for the home studio. The result, I bought the cheapest with the best isolation. Ends up being the Shures. If I wanted audiophile headphones I'd be looking for open back and be spending 3x as much.
