Rock'n'roll before that didn't have guitar that aggressively up front before, not to mention being so overdriven. Guitar driven were jump blues players who were proto-rock players but rock'n'roll was more piano oriented, the Fats Domino stuff and later by Little Richard.
But Fats Domino stuff was very important in rhythmic sense (like everything big from New Orleans). He had Earl Palmer on drums who started putting the emphasis on strong backbeat which influenced the way funk, rock, pop and the majority of things are played on the drums today.

After Ike... Bill Haley and Elvis popularized the guitar driven rock'n'roll but they had also strong country influences, rockabilly thing wasn't that dirty but then came Chuck Berry who was a true badass, another blues gangsta.

Ike set the foundation. And Jimi learned to do all the whammy bar stunts when he played with Ike.

Jimi got to good to play behind little richard and he busted out on his own.
Wild story huh, guy was a paratrooper, from seattle, went to England and then blew up the world.
          I love that motherfucker.
Not to derail the original post, but Ike is owed a huge debt no matter what his behavior.
Not helping the situation since 1965!

I like how the guitar riff is basically just a rolling piano line played through an amp begging for mercy.
