Great topic but Iconic is different than favorite.

        Miserlou - Dick Dale
        In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida - Iron Butterfly
You Really Got Me- The Kinks

Agreed, I cant put pantera anywhere near the top 100 iconic riffs, the majority of people dont even know who they are.

                1. Wild thing
                2. Born to be wild
                3. You really got me
                4. Iron Man/Crazy train (the annoying kid at GC always plays a medly)
                5. Smoke on water

All of which I once thought were good songs but now when i hear them I want to stab someone in the eye with a spork.

                6. Stairway to heaven....... for good measure

Don't know where you live, but damn near everyone I've ever known knows who Pantera is.

I'm pretty damn sure you've reached ICONIC status when Zakk Wylde tells ya "you're the best guitarist in the world, go do what you do..."

Sounds like the begining of a new post: "Is Pantera Iconic? What makes a band Iconic? When is a band considered Iconic?

I love Pantera. But I still wouldn't consider them Iconic. I'm sure there would be lots of opinions.....

I've learned two things so far in this thread... I live in a wierd place because 90% or more people wouldn't have the first clue what a Pantera is. More people would be more likely to think "Italian car with an American V8" than a band. Also, Zakk Wylde is the arbiter of icon status. I never knew that about him, I thought he was just the lord of pinch harmonic abuse.

Chugga Chugga *Ping* I dub thee an icon! Chugga Chugga *Ping* You're an icon too, buddy! Chugga Chugga *Ping* Thou art an icon!

                              Pantera - cool car, indeed.

Iconic to me - songs that everyone and thier sister covers (or butchers). Doesn't make them influential, or even good. For the record, I don't like any of these:

                              1. Johnny B Goode
                              2. Sweet Home Alabama
                              3. Sweet Child O Mine
                              4. Walk this way
                              5. Satisfaction

...and that Duelling Banjos riff, does that count?
