Granted, I'm particularly harsh on drummers since that was my first instrument and I grew up with a drummer for a dad. My benchmark for great drumming is John Bonham, if that gives you any perspective.

Is that really the level we have to stoop to before we hit "horrible"? I mean, I'll give you incompetent, but "look! He can hit the heads consistently, keep time and play fills!" doesn't necessarily remove someone from being horrible in my book. ;p

Popularity and talent really have no correlation, as we've seen time and time again. I love old Metallica, no doubt, and I even enjoyed some of Mastered by Muppets (aka Death Magnetic)...but the drumming never stood out as the focal point of interest.

I'm not trying to shit on anyone's musical tastes, so let me amend my statement:

I'll rewatch Binge and Purge though, maybe the past 20 years of material from the band has clouded my judgement and I'll give Lars props.

Lars Ulrich, solely in my opinion, is a (competent maybe, but) boring drummer. His choices as his career has gone on have baffled me, in terms of some of his playing technique as well as the choices made with his drum sound on records. This is completely removed from any opinions I may have about his personality and the like and revolves solely around what I've heard in terms of both studio and live work.

How does Sully Erna rate as a drummer?

Love that Battalla de los Tambores thing he does with their regular drummer.

Not metal, but the reprise riff in Youre So Beautiful Tonight by Clapton is petty well known and easy to play.

also, based on your fanboy post, are you 14?
On this front, Ill agree DB was good, but not as great as he could have been. After CFH, he just wanked around on the guitar for solos, they made no sense and were rarely in key. On CFH, the solos were fucking amazing, after that, just plain bullshit. Now his rhythms I found to be mostly entertaining, with a few that were just a WTF moment. Bottom line, I dont understand why he stands out above the rest to this day in popular opinion. If hed have kept up the solos like those of CFH, he could have been that great, but instead he decided to wank off for whatever reason. The talent was there, but he chose to not exploit it any further than CFH for some reason. Just my 2 cents.

Regarding Lars, hes adequate, but far, far from crappy(attitude not withstanding).

i'm an old 47 year old buzzard, and i tend to like alot of different types of music, but as far as iconic riffs go,
Lay it Down by Warren De Martini still rockets a chill in my back everytime I hear it still. And i've heard it in many forms,
played perfectly, (by me and warren-lol) i've heard it attempted by so many other players when jamming, in the studio, or the worst culprit of all,
I've heard it butchered horribly and loudly at guitar center. It was cool hearing other guys versions of it as well, sometimes you'd hear their own take on it with just a mere note's difference, we're going back decades here, but that riff and song with the solo was a must in your guitar
arsenal, and the angle of the pick and how he attacks the strings has always had my love of music to the point where i could block out the whole band and just listen to him, and i do dig Ratt very very much. So underrated is Warren de Martini, he ahcieved his own style, he doesn;t cop that much from EVH in the post EVH period. he's a hybrid of blues, and greasy tasty lightening, my favorite combination of a player.
Lay it Down Warren, you are the shit!!

fuckin ratt man. one band i just cant get tired of. lay it down was an awesome riff, and is a metric shit ton of fun to play, but there are so many other riffs from warren that it almost seems wrong to single out that one song. like youre in love. dead stupid simple but hard hitting and not so easy to keep time with, way cool junior was a holy shit down and dirty blues riff, on and on. i looovvvvee ratt. BUT i also kinda want to chime in on the pantera thing. dime was a nice guy, never met him, but a good friend of mine did. i like a few of their songs, love a few, and others i just go what was he thinking there? yuck. i agree about his tone not being great as well, buzzy and solid state sounding. i think its awful how he died, but no worse than randy or jimi. no disrespect intended there. he didnt deserve what he got, and he definitely did deserve more credit for his charity work and humanitarianism.
Let me tell you about a porcupine's balls.... They're small, and they don't give a shit!

                      • +1 to In My Dreams and Lay it Down also. Lynch and DeMartini are two of my favorite guitarists and created some of the baddest assed riffs/solos I've ever heard. Both instantly recognizable to boot.

                          "Instantly recognizable" is rare indeed.

I found a way to bring up Aldo Nova again. Been randomly doing it for almost 14,000 posts.
