I don't know about iconic but possibly they are the most over-rated and hyped metal band ever.

Dimebag was a GOD on guitar, Vinnie Paul is a great drummer, and Phil Anselmo has the greatest metal voice of all time, and is quite possibly the biggest badass of all time. I've learned two things so far in this thread... I live in a wierd place because 90% or more people wouldn't have the first clue what a Pantera is. More people would be more likely to think "Italian car with an American V8" than a band. Also, Zakk Wylde is the arbiter of icon status. I never knew that about him, I thought he was just the lord of pinch harmonic abuse.

If Diamond Darrel was a god, he wouldnt be six feet under. If Vinnie Paul was a great drummer he wouldnt be in a metal band. And if Phil Anselmo was the greatest metal voice of all time, then metal is in deep, deep trouble. Over rated? I dont think they were over rated, as they didnt really make that big of a splash outside their own fandom base. To be overrated they would have to be way, way bigger and way more well known. U2, Celine Dion, Madonna, those are over rated. Pantera was never that big to be over rated like those guys......

These are all opinions.

We have VERY different ones. I could not name a Pantera song that I thought was even good, let alone a masterpiece. But that is just my opinion.

Also iconic riffs (rhythmic figure) can recognized when played on any instrument, not just the specific song it was recorded on. Most of the riffs given would not pass a basic universal recognition test ("Walk" on clarinet? good luck making that work), much less iconic test, with the exception of Smoke On The Water, or Iron Man. Johnny B. Goode is distinctive, but its length robs of riff status and pushes it into phrase territory.

OT question/observation: why do a lot of Pantera fans say "Dimebag RIP" every 5 to 6 words? I personally liked Pantera AND Dimebag and it's a shame what happened to him, but I can respect him without saying "Dimebag RIP" constantly. It was a bummer what happened to Randy Rhoads as well, but people don't do the "Randy RIP" thing all the time. The whole thing just seems weird.

Yeah, in my circle Pantera was always kind of a joke and metal for fratboys/jocks/rednecks etc. They apparently were a glam band in the 80s when they first started out too. lol But yeah, this is just my opinion as you say. Rock on if if anyone likes em.

Pantera is not all that great. Dimebag as a guitarist? pshh - he was good at solos, but his rythyms are/were boring. phil anselmo is just a screaming douche-bag. vinnie paul? hahaha, MY drummer is just as good as he is. pantera's songs suck too. there are MANY bands that make MUCH more interesting music!!!
