  • NGD, Again

So its not a 45 like I had planned, but its a 40, so not far off. Close enough to appease my want for a larger caliber handgun. Taurus PT140 Millennium Pro, DAO, 10 +1. The best two features besides the size of it are the built in lock, which locks the slide and trigger from function and the extractor shows bright orange when a round is in the chamber.

I tried to get out to two different ranges today with no luck. So now Ive got two new guns that I still havent fired and will have to wait another week to do so. Damn it.

Im a fan of the sub $500 range right now. I have no doubt the Keltec will be great, well see about this one. Hopefully I can get to the range next weekend.

Absolutely will do. Ive read 50/50 good and bad about it. Frankly, every gun Ive ever owned has had reviews like that. Seems for every one person that thinks its the biggest piece of shit in the world and should have spent their money on a Kimber or of the like, there is one person that loves it and considers it a great value.

Most people dont seem to understand that a semi-auto pistol should be expected to be somewhat unreliable regarding feed and ejection. Thats the nature of the beast. Those that attest to near 100% reliability are/have either 1. lying because they dont want to admit that their $500+ gun functions no better than a sub $500 gun or 2. found the ammo the particular gun really enjoys firing early on instead of buying and firing umpteen brands with countless FTFs and FTEs.

I understand what you mean a 100%. I picked up a Taurus PT1911 a couple of years ago. I had a Glock 22 police trade in that I absolutely could not gel with. I downright hated that pistol. I traded it for the Taurus. Heard the 50/50 reviews as you mentioned above but said what the hell, for the features the gun has it's worth a shot. That pistol has performed flawlessly from day one. At least 3,000 rounds down the road and still not a hiccup. The big thing that people start harping about when Taurus comes up is metal injected molded parts. The sad thing is most of the kool aid drinkers are harping their gun is so much better and don't realize the gun they're bragging about has metal injected molded parts too.

I always get cracked up at the guys who cry because their pistol wont eat hollow points. After asking them if the broke it in properly they say sure, I ran 50 rounds of ball through it so it must be broke in. I just shake my head and move on. I won't shoot hollow points in any of my pistols until at least 500 rounds of ball have been down range. One thing for sure, my Taurus PT1911 for shoots and performs as well as my Colt, Dan Wesson and Springfield 1911's.

Does your PT140 have the "golf ball" sights? The last PT145 I looked out had them and I like that sight setup even though I don't have a pistol with that sight set up yet.

If by golf ball you mean the "straight 8" sights, yes. Two white dots aligned vertically and below where you intend to hit. That doesnt bother me any. I just have this feel when it comes to handgun shooting. It doesnt take me very many shots before I can hit where I want pretty well without anything more than looking down the barrel. By no means will I hit a bulls eye every time, but I get them where I want them, close enough.

As far as FTF on hollow points, a lot of that is the gun was designed around FMJ ammo. On a lot of guns, my Taurus for example, the feed ramp is rather narrow at its bottom most point and has corners, for a lack of a better description, on both sides of the bottom most part of the feed ramp. With the lack of a nose, or in simple mechanics, an inclined plane, that the JHP exhibit, it stands to reason that they may not feed reliably up the feed ramp, but rather get stuck on those corners. An FMJ round will slip right in because it is more narrow it its tip and able to fully avoid those corners. Why running 500 rounds through the gun will help is because after that many FMJ rounds rub on those corners on their way into the chamber, the corners rub away just enough to let the flat, hallow noses of the JHP rounds slip by where they would have gotten hung up previously. You could alternatively take the gun to a competent gunsmith and have the ramp modified to be wider at the bottom(not by extension, but by grinding away some of whats already there, much like 500 rounds of FMJ would) to allow the JHP rounds to chamber without the chance of snagging. Thats the deal, theyre designed around FMJ.

However, there are some guns that have a wider feed ramp and chamber JHP out of the box with no issues. The SCCY CPX-1 9MM is one. That gun had a rather wide bottom of the feed ramp, especially considering the caliber. It never in the time I had it jammed for any other reason than cheap ass ammo and the first few as it polished the feed ramp(maybe 100 rounds).

Heres what I mean about the feed ramps:

                      PT140 feed ramp

                      Keltec P3AT feed ramp

                      PT140 suggested grinding area

As you can see on the P3AT, the corners on the feed ramp are nearly nonexistent in contrast to those on the PT140 feed ramp.

Congrats on the new gun. One caliber I don't own is .40 S&W and last year I thought about possibly a Sig Sauer in .40 S&W. Figured they're nice guns and I don't own any Sigs or any .40's. Then I thought about it some more and decided that a .40 is a downloaded 10mm and I don't own a 10mm either. So ended up buying a Colt Delta Elite. Same thing as the ever popular .45 were used to but chambered in 10mm

Alright. Both the Keltec and the Taurus fired like clock work, both with two different brands of FMJ ammo. No trouble whatsoever out of either. Ran 100 through the Taurus and about 60 through the Keltec. I still have about 40 rounds of .380 left and Im fine with that. Every time the .380(Keltec) would fire it would smack the underside of my trigger finger with the trigger guard. Not pleasant at all, though it did not do that when firing one handed. The Taurus(.40) was a pleasure to shoot, though it did have a little more recoil than my dads .45. Ive chalked that up to weight. All in all, both pieces have my seal of approval. Next time out Ill try each with some JHP and see what happens then. Neither seem to favor any FMJ ammo, one box of .380 was some junk Id never heard of before, but the Keltec didnt care. Both ammos run through the .40 were both well known brands and again, it didnt have a preference.

Bottom line. If youre in the market for a couple of cheapys(under $500), these two are great, especially with the Keltecs concealability. While somewhat unpleasant to shoot, the little Keltec does its job just fine.
