Fresh strings is the #1 thing to maintain good tone. They make any guitar sound better IMO.

Seriously, your wife might be against getting new guitars or amps, but I'm somehow sure she still will let you buy new strings, won't she?
I'd get something that you're not allowed to get otherwhise, and I'm kind of sure the 50 bucks would be wasted on strings with that in mind.
I'm with dvscool about the crybaby if you don't have one yet.
They're in your price range, solid, and so far one of the most fun effects I know of.
