i will say as a guy that gigs a lot, running around like she is in that while playing even the simplest thing is NOT easy. standing in one spot, looking cool, while you play a complicated lick is one thing...but running around a stage while keeping your timing and playing the right notes is not an easy task.

unless you have MONSTROUS feet!!!! (poor girl)

robert, regarding my feeling as to why orianthi is "overrated"....for the opportunities she has been given, the artists she jams/records with, the fact that she has a PRS signature model - none of those things would be offered to a guy that could play the way she does. i often watch her videos and i have yet to see her really do anything all that impressive that would make her stand head-and shoulders above most semi-pro or pro-level guitarists that gig on a regular basis. the most difficult thing i have seen her do is run across that HUGE stage while playing the guitar....and i say that with some experience.
    GEAR:

some guitars...WITH STRINGS!!!! most of them have those sticks like on guitar hero....AWESOME!!!!

some amps...they have some glowing bottle like things in them...i think my amps do that modelling thing....COOL, huh?!?!?!

    and finally....

i have those little plastic "chips" used to hit the strings...WHOA!!!!

Listen, I didn't post this to claim that she was a virtuoso or the second coming of Hendrix or anything like that. That would be stupid considering it's a cover. I just thought it was a cool video and she did a good job considering her apparent youth and the fact that she was the ONLY one on the stage who was actually visually interesting, which I realise was by design.

Jesus! Some of you guys really need to take a heavy dose of "get over it." I've sat here and read threads where you sit and tear EVERY guitarist apart that's mentioned on this board, yet, I have yet to hear of any of you making a big noise in the music world. Lighten up a little! Shit!
Heed your own advise and lighten up a little, no need to be all defensive. She's a girl who is semi good looking, doesn't suck, doesn't shine, just an average guitarist playing live and having fun, entertaining but in all seriously BFD??? I'd take her playing than an the new metal dropped tuning to a bass crap that's popular today

I agree with what MarkD just said. I think he puts it best. I don't think she's a bad guitarist. If I still did the band thing, I'd probably be more than happy to have her in the band. And there are certainly things she does well that I can't do. She can sing. And she can sing while playing actual notes and riffs on the guitar. She can play running around. It's just the posturing that annoys me. If I saw a guy in a club band doing the same thing, I'd be just as annoyed. If you are going to showoff, do something that is showoff worthy. Anybody seen the video of Jason Becker doing the yoyo while playing? Granted, what he was playing wasn't very musical, but it certainly was somewhat technical AND he was doing the yoyo!!

For what's it's worth, I was going to refute the bitterness thing, but I got to thinking that maybe I am bitter about some things. I'm not bitter about the success thing though. I quit the rockstar dream in college. Life on the road is not quite as appealing to me as being with my family, a reliable paycheck with health and retirement benefits, 8 hours of sleep, and easy access to a decent gym. Heck, I've even gotten to the point where I've quit playing in bands because of the time involved. But here is where I am bitter: I am bitter that things I value are either no longer considered valuable, or have been stolen and perverted. Maybe I'm a dinosaur from the 80s, but it is disappointing to me that the ability to solo is no longer considered of high value. It pisses me off to see someone flash the metal horns (for something totally not metal) when that same someone would turn off the radio if Black Sabbath, Metallica, or AC/DC was on. It upsets me that metal is so unpopular today that I if want to keep the peace, I'm stuck listening to country music or rap if my wife or daughter are in the car. Our standards for guitar playing have become so low that this girl, who while not a bad player is certainly not great, is being thrust into guitar hero status by guys like Steve Vai (who I otherwise totally respect) and Michael Jackson. And then that gets used as proof that she must be good!! So I guess I am bitter. 20 years ago, maybe not everyone knew who Malmsteen was, but if you talked to another guitar player, at least they would know who you are talking about. Today, it should be same for guys like Broderick, Loomis, Cooley, and even Guthrie. But it's not. Mention these names to the first person you meet in Guitar Center and I think chances are pretty good they'll know one of those guys at most.

Meh, I could ramble on. Maybe I need to see a shrink...

Keep in mind josh there is art in "performance". She's playing a big venue with a large audience so you really have to "over exaggerate" just about everything. I don't have a problem with showmanship (womanship here) putting the hand in the air while doing a simple trill isn't meant to entertain guitar players...98% of the audience is not one . The ones who are are easy to spot, standing close with arms crossed saying amongst themselves "shit, I can do that better" lol

How many of you have watched Michael Jacksons This is it? Maybe seeing her playing in that would give you a different opinion on her playing. I don't know, but she didn't have any of the "cheesy" moves as shown in this video. Of course her place was to be heard not seen, unless asked by Michael. Then her place was really to be Jennifer Batten part 2, which in her own way she did a fair job. Her style is plenty different from Batten, but her stage presence is similar. One thing I will say if Michael Jackson selects you to be his guitar player, your more than average! period!

We are the absolute WORST fans to be in the audience. Overcritical and nitpicky!

WINNA WINNA WINNA!!! WE GOT US A WINNA!!!

for a "pro" guitarist/singer, she is mediocre at best. there are alot of other guitarists out there much better than her.

Lets address the Micheal Jackson situation. I am guessing he saw the stage value of her performance and wanted Jennifer Batten mark II for that this is it tour. I saw her play the "beat it" solo once and she fuckin destroyed it. just terrible. he had Slash play live with him once and it was a disaster when the solo for "Beat it" came up. I would rather see an unknown guitarist nail the solo. than some flamboyant pro or new guitar hero fuck it up.

I admit, I have high standards for what I expect when I see a "professional" musician perform. Hey, we are paying money and they are supposed to be PROS. dammit, they should be frickin awesome. case in point: if you have ever seen the TSO play live, watch the violinist Anna Phoebe. that is the definition of professional musician. all pros should use her level of performance as a goal for a standard. I know, I know, you probably think I am an ass, but hey, look at pro athletes that excel, its about personal pride, there just isnt enough of that in music today. its all about the easy road to a profit.

Well, well, well. Look what I found on the web!! It's Orianthi!! Sort of.

This version is younger, plays tastier licks, and has cleaner technique. Plus, she seems to know the following:
                      eyes closed="I'm feeling this"
eyes open looking straight into the audience or camera="Check this out. I'm playing something cool"

I like this version!! Was she abducted by aliens?

What do you think tonemonster? You and I seem to have been on the same page so far. Is this younger version more respectable?

She did a music vid jam with Steve Vai.

BTW Slash plays Voodchile CONSTANTLY! He does one with the Uli. Uli does Hendrix RIGHT! He married Jimi's girfirend for poop sake. That means Uli's PP..was in same exact jayjay as Jimi's PP.

I just dont get the whole celebrity worship thing. I mean come on. Santana and Vai just worshiping her for no real reason. Sure, she can play the guitar well, but is she all that? I dont think so. I dont see the big deal here.

dont get me wrong, more power to her, and I wish her well and success in her career in music. but I just do not see what all the fuss is about.

OK, that's not being totally honest.
