Not being defensive at all. I'm just sick of overcritical armchair rockstars. I never once said that I thought she was the be all and end all of female guitarists. Far from it. But just as someone else pointed out, you don't get selected to play for Michael Jackson if you suck. She had some big shoes to fill following Jennifer Batten (which is probably where the big feet come in handy.) I don't think assessing another's skill set with a negative results means that you are jealous or envious. And saying so is a weak defense. The reality is that Orianthi is a polarizing figure in the guitar world. Her rhythm work is solid I guess. But most guitarists are known and judged by their soloing, an area she does not excel in. You can go to any college with a respected music department and find a handful of guitarist who can hand it to her. Thus the headscratching about why guys like Vai and Santana praise her like she's the second coming. Or why Jackson would pick her.
I tell you what. If guys like MarkD, tonemonster, and myself are so out of whack for expressing our confusion and frustration as to the praise heaped upon her by respected musicians in the industry, please enlighten us as to what it is that she is being praised for. Oh, with these conditions: her rhythm work is pretty darn solid, but I'm assuming that's not what she is getting her respect for. And let's assume that it's not her showmanship. I'm simply asked someone to highlight for me what is so amazing about her as a guitarist.Comment

Btw, I also meant to make an observation coupled with a guess as to perhaps what has happened.
Most of the praise for Orianthi that I'm specifically aware of is 2-3 years old. Watching the clips back then, her playing was more tasteful, and a little cleaner. She was also younger so there was probably the assumption of continued improvement. Here's my guess as to what happened. Guys like Vai and possibly Michael Jackson, with a genuine intent to help her, start encouraging her to be more outgoing and using more showmanship on stage. Also, she releases a more mainstream record with that According To You song on it (which, for what it is, is actually a pretty decent song, and out of the crap I've been stuck listening to when my daughter is in the car, was probably a highlight of the music being played at the time). So for various reasons she learns that there's more to being a successful musician than being great at your instrument, and thus her focus shifts, and her technique, at least for soloing, stops progressing and she becomes more of a songwriter performer. However, this is the version we become familiar with, and thus the confusion as to why she would receive such praise, forgetting that this praise is a couple years out of date.Comment

I picked up her album for my 9 year old daughter. I would much rather having her look up to an actual musician that is trying to express herself through her instrument then any of the no talent, manufactured pop stars out there right now.Comment

No. Satriani is my favorite, and I still acknowledge the fact that theres better than him out there.
