Store owners cannot, under any law or for any reason, demand a percentage of a deal done in front of their store just because it involves items similar to what they deal.

It's a foregone conclusion the store guy would not have paid you what the other guy did, but you can bet he would've given you the old line about "well I've got all this extra expense and blah blah", and he would have asked far more than you did.

I say piss on it. Yes you're going to lose out on a few heads-ups from the store owner, but with medical bills, I'd say you've got bigger fish to fry than getting more gear.

When he misses the money, he'll call.
I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

The most human thing we can do is comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.

Cash speaks for anyone. It seems he considers you a bit of a threat to his business but I'm not there.
The damage is done, you don't owe him anything that time won't smooth over, but given the accuracy of memory on what goes on in transactions, you might want to carry one of those little 007 secret video recorders or just go gusto with a hero head cam.

Don't sweat it. Its not that big of a deal. Its not like you work for the guy and did a backdoor deal.

I say fuggums. If his skin isn't any thicker than that he shouldn't be in retail at all.
I want to go out nice and peaceful in my sleep like my grandfather, not screaming and hollering like the passengers in his car.

I think you guys are right no way he would have given me as much for the guitar anyway so piss on him.
I just had to vent and get it off my chest.
            Really? well screw Mark Twain.

Just think of a dog in the yard barking to protect its turf... you're just walking up the sidewalk. Depending on the dog and how you act, the scenario can vary but I can definitely see a parallel. Hmm, maybe carry a choke collar next time you're in his store.

I don't think it's a big deal. Business is business, friends are friends, etc. He most likely would've offered you way less anyway (it is a used gear store). He's not in your situation. If he's pissed off over a simple transaction and he can't forgive you for something that you didn't do wrong, he can f*ck off!

You already apologized. There is no reason to sweeten it with something he can sell in his store. If the shop owner wants to be a dick about it and not accept your apology then fuck him. If he is holding that against you just don't do any business with the guy because even if you try to negotiate on an item he wont bend and give you a deal...fuck him. His attitude is why mom and pop shops have a hard time surviving.

Oh, go on, it'll be a little special thing between you and him. No need to came back and tell us, really. It'll give you a warm feeling inside.

He won't miss your business, he won't cry himself to sleep if your health problems claim you in the middle of the night. I think he'd actually raise a glass! If it had been my shop, you'd have been paying off some dental bills too, I'm sorry to say.

                    Why?

Because he owns/rents premises, pays staff, business rates, advertising, to heat and light the place whilst cocksuckers who "always have something in the trunk" hang about stealing his oxygen before whipping the food from his childrens' mouths. Times is hard, in case you hadn't noticed, for everyone - especially the poor fuckers who take on the overheads of a legitimate business, and are finding the storm pretty hard to weather. At the end of it all, when you only have the MegaGuitarsRUs Inc chain to go to, you'll reminisce about the Good Old Days when you could have a laugh and drink coffee and talk bollocks all day with the small business owner - just remember who it was who shoved the knife in his back.

I'm not saying you shouldn't have done the deal, but your haste to do it in full view of the owner makes you one of those things that begins with "C" and ends with "unt", certainly in the store owner's eyes. When he wakes up sweating in the night over unpaid bills, he'll swear to pay you back in spades. I wonder how many of these parasites loitering around shops, looking to make a sale of their own, pay their taxes, like the store owner does? Try not to be so eager to piss all over someone's shoes next time, and remember, Karma's a bitch...

But like I say, a BJ (and a box of donuts) goes a long way...
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

I'm not only an Internet tough guy, but one with a HUUUUUGE cock too!!

I dare say you are right, but as the man says, things are a little different over here - no guns, no culture of suing the shit out of each other. Just the odd punch in the mush at the boozer.

My Dad owned a chipshop and told me he once heard a couple of geezers talking about my business, all very complimentary. Just as he was about to say "That's my son!", one of them warned the other that I could be a complete cunt and not to mess me about over money or end up in the canal. Dad was shocked and ashamed (initially), but I was pleased when he told me!

Pleased, because while every other PA company round here gets fucked around, bookings cancelled at the last moment, kit stolen etc, no-one fucks me about. It's not that I swagger about, or want to be known as a hard man, because I'm most definitely not.
If you take the food from my babies' mouths though...well, I'll have something to say about it. If anything, it's good for business - I do a damned good job (even if I do say so myself) and everything is above board and professional. Other professionals appreciate that and will pay my fee rather than pay less to some cunt who works from his garage at home and doesn't have the overheads I have, taxes I pay etc.
Once you start letting people take liberties...well, they start doing deals right under your nose. Not in front of me they don't!

If I came across as nasty to Straycat, I didn't mean to be - everyone has to do what they gotta do. He should have been more discreet, or have the balls to go into the shop like nothing has happened (but be aware that if the owner lets him in, he is seething inside and will be looking to pay him back and fuck him over).
Maybe when times are good again, and everyone is doing good business, doing deals like he did might be something that shop owners can let pass. If things are the same over there as they are over here right now (ie. fucking grim), every sale, every penny counts, and might be the difference between survival or closure.

In my mind I think he is a dick because he wouldn't look me in the eye.
I think I'm done with him for a while and shop elsewhere and when I get my ass back on the positive side still shop and trade in other stores.
I will suck no one I have my pride. thanks guys.

This changes the entire tone of the thread. First of all, you could have just as easily met the buyer in front of the local Starbucks. Secondly, this store owner isn't entitled to a commission (or Jack Shit, really), because of the location. Thirdly, he has now lost a good long-time customer because of his attitude.

                            Piss on him.

Rsmacker save your insults please.I have helped this guy. When he had just opened his store I bought some high ticket vintage guitars he had very little money in.I paid his asking price. (2) 50's LP JR's they aren't cheap even here in the USA.
I have sent him lots of business to and he is well aware of that.
What gets me the guy who is known for doing this type of thing gets a a pass and I get the pissed off look even after an apology.
Power tube you are right I should have caught myself and said lets go down the road and do this deal.

Yes, maybe you should have gone somewhere else to do the deal BUT, there's no call for him patting the other guy on the back while being a dick to you. I understand why you feel bad and that shows alot about your character. Everyone makes mistakes in life. I get why he was pissed and understand about the "running a business" thing but he failed to stop and think how his actions make him look to others. A lesson should be learned on both sides here, not just by you. As far as punching someone in the mouth goes, that's easy to say sitting behind a keyboard, but there might be a surprise there about who winds up on the recieving end. The thing too many people forget is "treat others the way you want to be treated". You did good by apologizing. Leave it at that. Maybe it was just an off day for the guy. Give it some time then go back and test the waters. If you still catch the same treatment from him maybe he doesn't want or need your money and that will be his loss. He doesn't own the only place to get what he offers. You tried to make right by him. If he can't respect that you manned up and did that then that's on him. Yeah, you screwed up, but you reallize that and feel bad about it. How many people would have done the same thing and it not bothered them one bit?
