It always amazes me that steel toe boots are not cumpulsory in the US at work sites (where heavy stuff is moved about), they are in pretty much all of Europe and many companies provide them free of charge to employees (but you buy your own if you want comfortable ones!)

They dont require us to wear steel toe boots, which I thought was strange, but Id imagine its due to all the fork truck traffic. I wouldnt want to be wearing steel toes while getting my foot run over by a 6000 pound machine with solid tires. On the other hand, a broken toe sucks. Think Ill go back to a thicker leather boot that will absorb a lot of the energy.

Maybe they don't require you to wear them, but in that line of work common sense should tell you to, required or not. As far as getting your foot ran over by a 6000lb machine goes, if that happens to you then honestly you have no business working there in the first place if you can't figure out how to move your foot out of the way of something that size. Sorry if that pisses you off.

I was thinking the same thing, but being a safety guy, I expect my guys to act right.

The company is supposed to do a risk assessment and require the proper PPE for their employees. I'm guessing their safety program is lacking. I hope it works out for ya Twitch.

Some lower end companies don't want to require PPE because they become responsible for providing it.
                  Sad fact.

I know your pain rd, I'm a full time safety guy also.

We work in close quarters a lot with the fork trucks, its as much the operators job to watch out for our feet as it is ours to not get them run over. I dont think the company is skimping on the PPE. Ive had plenty of employers that require the steel toe boots that made the employees buy them themselves. At any rate, there are plenty of other things we mess with that wouldnt be pleasant to have smash a steel toe around my toes, so its kind of a catch 22. Im just gonna go back to my heavy leather boots. Had I been wearing them that day, Id have a bad bruise at worst.

Anyhow, this post wasnt meant to be a squabble about whos at fault and who should have been wearing what, it was just a hey this sucks thread. I had boots and I didnt wear them that day because it was hot. I lost that gamble, wont lose it again. Live and learn. I got some kick ass pain pills out of it and a few days off, so not all bad. I do like my job though.

I hurniated 2 discs in my lower back at work a few years ago. Skipping a lot of the story, in the end i got paid full back pay for the time i missed in weekly checks after i got released. Got a job and collected 2 pay checks a week for about a year. Was brutally broke till then tho. Spent most if it catching shit up

And that does suck man, i dont wear steel toes cos id rather break a toe then lose several but everything is a gamble. Hope it heals up fast buddy!

If your foot gets run over by a 3-ton vehicle while wearing sneakers or other non-steel-toe shoes, what do you think would happen then? Yes, the steel cap will cut them all off, and not at all cleanly, and it'll hurt like a bitch as it happens. It won't be any more pleasant in anything else. Yes, you can move your foot out of the way in steel toes as quickly as you can in just a pair of socks.

I always wore steel toes when I worked in an environment that involved anything weighing more than 10 pounds being more than 6 inches off the ground for any reason.

That said, I've had very few dropped things actually hit the toe. Most everything rolled down my shin or landed on the strings. It hurt, but wasn't an injury.

Do not depend on the forklift driver for your safety, and never believe anyone who says pedestrians have the right of way. Peds can stop and turn more quickly than a moving 3-ton vehicle, and if that vehicle is carrying a load, the load will continue moving in the direction of travel even of the forklift stops suddenly.

The visibility on a forklift is largely non-existent. Just because you can see it or hear it, doesn't mean the driver can see or hear you.

If you're working in "close-quarters" with moving vehicles, then you need to step completely out of the area until the vehicle has moved away, then move back in to prep the next load so you can be out of the area when it returns.
Ideally, if you're stacking a load for the lift to take, stack it out in an open area rather than down a cramped aisleway, as it makes the driver more efficient since they can just swing by and pick it up, and you are safely in the relatively enclosed aisleway. As well, you're not moving out of the aisleway and potentially into the path of another vehicle.

Twitch you are an idiot for not wearing steel toes. But I know things are different to say the least over there. Here in the UK, you are hard pushed to find a pair of sneakers or boots WITHOUT steel toes and mid soles, and they are cheap as chips, one of the few things, including Hi-viz's that don't have 20% tax on them. What is it about the USA that all you can find is thousands of pairs of junk, overpriced, chinese footwear and absolutely no useful day to day working tools or boots at all? I mean I was looking high and low for an all steel digging fork, but it seems they don't exist over there. What's the deal? They are all made in China anyhow? I know you guys use a machine for absolutely everything and you have the space which we don't....but surely there must be times when you can't get a backhoes or minidigger in...FFS. I'm a landscaper myself and seeing how you guys work makes me laugh to be honest. You'd get fired over here after about two minutes, making like you are working, using those tiny long handled trench shovels to move mulch about with like that...Yeah I guess heavy duty short handle wide mouth shovels don't exist either, like the snow ones but mad of stuff a 3 tonne Takeuchi could run over and still be fine.

The irony is that you can find millions of really decent prescision tools and lathes and home workshop stuff, (We have that too but in specialist stores though) not on display like that in Lowes and JCPennies) just that you can't buy any commercial heavy duty hand digging tools with handles made from steel scaffold poles and safety boots cost $100. They are $20 over here, less sometimes.

When it comes to H&E and working on site and building a cavity brick wall in the same time it takes to put up a timber framed house, I'm glad I'm British! Then again you'd probably laugh that we still use hammers, although we do have nail guns. Honest.

I thought we all were in a global economy?

I'd be glad you still have your toes at all and an RSJ shelving unit didn't severe them off completely, seen that happen. Tsk Tsk.
And loose your toes and its pretty damn hard to walk.

Heavy duty Tarmac rakes, there's another one I haven't seen over there or heavy duty wheelbarrows. But then you probably use tracked dumpers and rakes attachments on your excavators....silly me.

Employees buy them themselves...well yeah and? If you rocked up without PPE in the UK you wouldn't be let in the gate, simple as that really.

Anyways, hope you get better soon though, I did that when I was a kid, my best mate dropped a 7N breeze block (450x215x100mm) on my toe (I was in bare feet) when he forgot he was holding it and went to open a door instead. Like dropping a block on a snail. lol. Hurts don't it!

Only problem with steel toes and midsole summer laceups is that the lack of flex cause them to fall apart after about a month in all weathers and mud etc. I've tryed everything, Dickies, Timberland etc etc, including those expensive (£170) German Steiz Secura boots. Right now I'm settled on Wellco's desert issues as although they don't a have a steel toe or mid, they have enough plastic there for what I need them for and they last for ever...just brush them down with a wire brush. Bloody brilliant and I'm knee deep in shite or cement slurry as everyday here it rains.

Seriously if someone came to work for me without PPE and then tryed to sue on H&E grounds on his first day, I'd simply cut my losses, seriously, hit him on the head with a spade and bury him 6' under with the Takeuchi and I'm from the UK where we are still pretty much evolving a suing culture!
