Yeah I wanted to like them more, but they seemed to miss the mark as a band a lot. I think the first Audioslave record is Cornell's best.

I started off listening to early Rolling Stones when I was 10, although a fair bit of Motley Crue and WASP too. I have only just made it to 1984 and I seem to be stuck here. However if I do grow any older, I will look out for what you call 'Grunge' when it comes along!

ugh grunge. For the record, AIC are not grunge, they just happened to come along during that time. Listen to them and then listen to that little bitch Kurt Nobrain. Totally different. Yea they had some darker themes, but they were just a hard rock band with blues influenced guitar work. Great band. Nirvana? Fuck em. Pearl Jam, I can listen to em, but not a huge fan, Soundgarden, clusterfuck. To me grunge means that the art o guitar came very close to dying, then it did with all the 90s nu metal. Im a fan of hair metal or the huge articulate solos and intricate guitar work. but yes, Alice in Chains is a great band.
Let me tell you about a porcupine's balls.... They're small, and they don't give a shit!

Well see, that's what was missing. A bottom line!

Haha... only been to Ruthies like once, and I barely remember... but I did go to all the other places quite often... The Farm, now that was an amazing place for punk shows. You could see stars through the roof at night, and it often rained inside during shows... one time, I think it was Black Flag, don't remember... the equipment started sparking and shorting out in the middle of a show and they just kept going... lol the Kabukhi, the Mabuhei, Stone, Filmore, The Omni, Warfield, One Step, etc...

If you went to metal shows at any of those other places, I'm sure we bumped heads.

I was like, also at almost every Vio-lence show before they got signed. They were just amazing to see.

I always dug Sweetwater, but they were more of a blues based rock thing than 'grunge' to me.

I guess the thing I did hate about grunge was the retro Fender/Gibson style guitars in place of J/C and the "other" pointies. Even Cantrell gets a low score here!

Oh hell yeah! They just happened to originate in Seattle in the mid 90's, though. That being said, for some reason I don't think that Cobain's sloppy style was a big influence on Loomis.

That's awesome! I actually moved to San Diego at the end of 1985, so I missed the tail-end of the scene, but I was able to see Metallica with Mustaine at the Old Waldorf, as well as Kerry King when he was in Megadeth at Ruthies...just a crazy, awesome time in music...FWIW, Mabuhay Gardens is reopening in August, but it's going to be called Fame, my buddy Scott is booking everything there, he's a solid NWOBHM and punk fan, keep an eye open for it!

Ah, that's too bad, in 1985 is when thrash really started to gain momentum. Thanks for the info, I'll have to check the club out as long as they get good billings!

The 90s were great, because of grunge I discovered Dream Theater and some similar prog clones. Also, I started listening more and more to "instrumental guitar" music. Learned to appreciate jazz and kept listening to 80s stuff too and still do.

Who said grunge was that bad.

And cool to read some cool stories about 80s thrash. Weird but back then, I was as much into "Hair metal" and those bay area thrashers. Also really liked some stuff coming from Europe.
