    Nothing pushed me into grunge.
From 80's metal I kinda went into Prog, then from prog to Jazz, then to surf and instrumental metal/rock/swing.
Now I'm working through some 70's Cooper and King Diamond etc etc. Stuff with that nasally LP sound. Real raunchy sounding.

I think the closest I got to grunge was the Weird Al cover of Nirvana.

@Flatpicker, we got a similar journey except for the last part... I'm still far from that 70s stuff at the moment.

        Seems like.
The 70's stuff? I dunno, it's just that sound (i don't know if it's an early rat or what) it sounds so raw and awesome.

I'll be a metalhead till the day I die, but I hold grunge to a higher candle than hair metal. I honestly can't stand any of it. The early stuff was bad and later stuff was really bad (easily evidenced by that video, and many others.)

Fortunately, I wasn't around to endure it.

Unfortunately, I wasn't around to thrash it out either.

Oh, and I love Pearl Jam.

For me it was probably the late hairmetal bands like Trixter and Slaughter who had singers that sounded like chipmonks that did it.

And I am not gonna lie. Metallica going full-on mainstream helped too. Luckily that happened when pantera was breaking out, so I had something adequately mean and heavy to compensate for the void.

And listening to Pearl Jam's "Ten" and Soundgarden's "Superunknown" albums made me think grunge had some respectable levels of talent tucked away (seriously listen to the entire "Ten" album besides just the mainstream hits; it's incredible, more of a blues-rock album than what's defined as "grunge," and is one of the best blues-rock albums I've ever heard) after thinking it was tard shit due to the negative impression Kurt Cobain left on me.

Hard to identify a song... Don't Treat Me Bad? Final Countdown? Cherry Pie? Any Random Poison Song? Hard to pick 'cause after '87 they all sounded Exactly. The Fucking. Same. The wife was infamous for buying CDs for one song, lol.

Never was a fan of Whiner Rock, tho. Grunge is, however, to be credited with the following:
              1. Successfully convinced me to never listen to the radio ever again. (still in-force)
              2. Successfully convinced me to never wear plaid/flannel ever again. (mostly still in-force)
              3. Successfully demonstrated than within a half-generation, rock culture had evolved from pounding beers to crying into them.
              ex. >
              4. Created an atmosphere that allowed Dream Theater and Pantera to be successful. Super-extra brownie points!!
              5. Achieved the torturous self-immolation that seemingly every song stated as the desired goal of all things. Nicely played.
              ----
              750xl, 88LE, AT1, Roswell Pro, SG-X, 4 others...
Stilletto Duece 1/2 Stack, MkIII Mini-Stack, J-Station, 12 spaces of misc rack stuff, Sonar 4, Event 20/20, misc outboard stuff...

Why do I still want MORE?

Well said nor!!! This should be added to the "grunge" definition on Wikipedia.

OK I guess I need to suffer a few thrown shoes to the face and defend grunge a bit here. So, one thing that was often not a strong point with hair metal was the lyrics. There was a lot of really interesting songwriting in the 70's from a lyrical perspective: STYX, the Police, Yes, Pink Floyd, the list goes on. They were very intelligent and thought-provoking and took you somewhere. NWOBHM still had that to a limited extent, but hair metal...not so much. I mean, "Blondes in Black Cars" only goes so deep, you know? So as much fun as that may have been, I thought grunge brought that sense of wonder and mystery back and was a refreshing change. In addition, now there was a heaviness to it that 70's prog rock didn't have. I still wonder what the hell "Even Flow" is about. That being said, I think a lot of what Cobain wrote was random word and phrase generation. But, Pearl Jam was excellent and so was AiC and STP (if you can call them grunge). Oh and you thrash fanboys: your team doesn't score many points in this category either.

Pearl Jam's lyrics were so powerful that some people shot themselves with...shotguns.
I think Kurt was listening to PJ a bit.

I always thought Vedder would "off" himself after listening to some of that stuff.
Apparently he didn't take it too seriously.

Lyricly grunge was emo as fuck, hair metal was mostly cock rock... There were of course standouts, but I spent more time listening to punk and thrash... Aight, I did like Ozzy, Ratt, and Dio ....

Yeah I dunno, outside of "Jeremy" I don't think PJ was that dark. AiC...yeah that was pretty dark. But, you know, grunge wasn't any darker that "The Wall"...and Pink Floyd got a free pass on that. And, let's not forget "Kickstart my Heart"...we're talking some serious hard core drug use inspired lyrics there in the hair metal camp.

Aww come on. You gotta give grunge credit because it (and the subsequent alt-rock) didnt just knock out hair-metal, it also knocked out pop music, and for the majority of the decade there were no boy bands, no teenage pop queens, and none of that horrid artistically bankrupt "partying-and-puppy-love" consumerist pop music full of karaoke performances with dance troupes. We had near-total peace from that shit until the last couple of years of the 90's.

Now pop is back in control and the music industry is the shittiest it has ever been.

Yeah, unfortunately though when that shit came back in the late 90s it came back with a vengeance. (Has horrible flashbacks of hearing Britney Spears, The Backstreet Boys, and NSYNC everywhere he went.)
