Hair Metal was killed off by The Black Album, in particular James Hetfield's perm, it was so embarrassing that we all wanted Courtney Love to kill us too.
(Oh, and Lars Ulrich's spandex trousers. I distinctly recall Mr Hetfield stating, whilst onstage at Donington, 6 years previously, that they weren't about "eye-liner and spandex and all that shit". How wrong that turned out eh?)
I'd rather listen to (or watch) a load of middle-aged poofters mincing about in make-up singing about pussy than some scruffy cunts who can't play guitar solos and look like they need a good kicking (like students). So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!
I nearly broke her back

Warrant sucked then. The music still sucks. Nirvana sucked then. The music sucks now.
Whereas Pearl Jam and AIC created music that is still worthy today because they were not bound by the trend that was grunge.
Same goes for bands like Ratt or Tesla that were not bound by hair metal - Ratt just had a shitty singer with nearly the gayest of all haircuts in the 80's.
Guns and Roses seemed like they would be a good alternative to both hair metal and grunge. But then they never released another good album after Appetite._________________________________________________

Your tag line, now THAT is a waste of time & a bother. It's nothing profound, nothing interesting. Who gives a shit. He took 3 takes and kept one. That's special why? It's the definition of not special: "Musician does several takes, keeps one". If that's sig worthy, to be slathered under your every utterance going on 600 times, Don's post must be like the engravings on the tablets coming down the mountain with Moses screaming, "YOU GUYS GOTTA CHECK THIS OUT!".

For me, it was really just the first round of bands that I got into. I like Motley Crue and Ratt. They had an edge. I love Lynch, though Dokken always was cheesy as a band. I was more of a NWOBHM guy before and even during that time, and really went back to explore the classic 70's rock when hair metal was in full force.
I agree that Guns and Roses put the first nail in the coffin.* I think the explosion of Metallica's Black Album was the final nail, as much (if not more) than Nirvana. They were the same year. It seemed that "real" metal was much more than thing all of a sudden.
* There are some straight forward rock bands that get lumped in with hair metal that I really enjoy to this day too, like Tesla.
