Well Don, since we're talking about a 2001 Windstar I think I'm pretty damned qualified, but obviously my thirteen years in automotive doesn't lay up shit to whatever qualifications you have so I'll leave you to you Mopar nut swinging.

No issues with the tranny on my 07 stang (60k). I drive it pretty hard, but it gets regular maintenance. The last ride i had that was this hassle free?

      My '72 Ford Maverick.
      750xl, 88LE, AT1, Roswell Pro, SG-X, 4 others...
Stilletto Duece 1/2 Stack, MkIII Mini-Stack, J-Station, 12 spaces of misc rack stuff, Sonar 4, Event 20/20, misc outboard stuff...

Why do I still want MORE?

        Since we're talking transmissions.

What is supposed to be the stock transmission for an '86 Monte Carlo SS?
And why does it cost $170 for a basic fluid & filter change?

I decided I didn't want to do it right now, noticed a leak...and that's what it cost.
They had some trouble figuring out what tranny was in it.

Just had to replace the transmission in my wife's 05 Mustang. Never had a problem with either of the two Ford Rangers. Had two rangers for 17 years over the course of the last 20. So, they're batting .666.

I'm not challenging your qualifications - I'm sure the older ones are crap. But the newer ones with the NAG1 trannies are solid.

I was just verifying that you were talking about the older shit. That's all.

The 86 should have the 200R4. These are the same length as the TH350 and can be swapped to the TH350 with minimal effort as far as swaps go. You can go with the 700R4, but, it is about 3" longer and you will need to shorten your drive shaft. -Lou

I've had 99 F-150, 2001 F-150 an 2002 Eddie Bauer Expedition...no tranny issues with any of those ones. The wife has a 2008 Edge and also have no issues with.

                      OK, thanks.
For some reason we thought it was 700R4.

I'm very happy with the 200R4.
No issues and it shifts very tightly, no slip in between.
Someone may have installed a shift kit in the past.

                      Fords?
I've had several cars and trucks, and no problems.
Just service them and they will take care of you (usually).

Should be a TH200R4, but maybe they were expecting a 700r4? Most people unnecessarily thought the 200 was junk back in the day, but actually the earlier 700's were supposedly weak. Maybe it was swapped for a 700? $170 seems really steep!

                          Sorry for the confusion.
Turns out it is actually a 200.
$170 seems steep to me also.
That's why I usually do my own work.
Just too swamped with amp work right now to deal with it.
                          Blessing in disguise.

Were the bellhousing bolt patterns the same on the three variants?
I vaguely recall that being a concern when I installed the '69 350 but it fit OK.

Cyg, a fluid and filter change on a 700R4 should be no more expensive than a 2004R (yes, its really a 2004R, not a 200R4 and commonly mispronounced). And yeah the early 700's before 86 were kinda crappy. 200's are pretty decent, after all they stood up to the 3.8l turbo Buick motors in Grand Nationals and Turbo TransAm's.

Just do it yourself, it really is simple! Unbolt the pan slowly, let the fluid drain out as much as possible to one side, then lower the pan all the way and dump old fluid. Pop off the old filter, pop on the new filter, clean the magnet in the bottom of the pan, bolt the pan back on and refill with fluid. It really is that easy!

And on to the topic, not a Ford guy by any means, but have never heard any major complaints that I know of, no more than others really. My buddys 02 Mustang GT trans is starting to act up right around 100k miles. Not too bad for a typical auto that hasnt had the easiest life in a pony car IMO.

                              Thank you Rob.
Time was the issue, had to get it done and it was quicker to drop it off, pick it up and pay than slip the jacks under it.

We bought a new 2003 Ford Explorer and six months later with 4800 miles on it the main seal in the transmission fails. This while the family is on vacation in lake Tahoe. Three days of wasted vacation and Ford would not even provide a rental car. This truck was the biggest piece of shit that Ford has eve built. I traded it in on a Toyota three years later when I was told it needed a complete tranny rebuild at 60,000 miles. In that time the blend door in the heater/ac blower failed leaving it with out heat or AC. Since the entire dash had to be remove to make the repair Ford wanted $2800.00 to re place a $40.00 part.
Fuck No! Ford = shit. It was the first and last I will ever buy. The Toyota had 280.000 trouble free miles when I traded it in.
