The wooden desk would require a couple extra 6u or 8u racks to get the speaker height correct. The main problem is getting it to the house as the seller is a warehouse and allow collection only. £350 for the main desk, the extra 6/8U rack blocks would cost extra.

Only has 8U rack space but everything's the right height. I can get one delivered and assembled for £550-£600.


The room is 3.5 metres x 4.5 metres. Either desk will fit. Which desk would you choose and why?

See if there are any retailers over that carry RTA Studio Desks. I have this one in cherry in my cave an works out well. You have some RU's on the top side for easy access as well racks on each side on the bottom.

Hmmmmm, although the top one has better levels for stashing tissue boxes, hand cream and this month's edition of "Salty Seamen", I'd choose the second option.

I am rubbing myself into a frenzy thinking of the ways a person could be tied up/down/roundandaround on that bench, there's even a level to bite onto when things are getting intense.

I tell you what though, sugar-buns. Are you any good with a saw? Have you considered building one yourself to fit your needs? I'm looking at the prices and hmmm.

That first unit looks very easy to make and would cost under £100 for you to do it yourself.

I made my own desk based of an Omnirax mixstation desk that cost around 2000 shipped and I still would have to put it together.

I built mine for $114 total. over 4 nights just piddling in the garage after work. It can be moved anywere, as it is just 2 side cars and the middle shelves between.


I did eventually shorten the top racks though.





Anyway, something to think about..and save some cash with.

I say go with the first one, the only draw back is your rack gear will not be directly in front of you like desk #2 gives you.
The first seems a bit more organised & you can set up monitors with more space & a bigger screen monitor if you like.
I would go with the first for a over all better spaced set up. Good luck !

I agree with Drake. The first one will be more functional. It does look a bit cramped but still more functional. I too have an Omnirax like Dave, well Dave was smarter and built his! I am now tossing my Omnirax out and building a custom one. My new one is based off of an Argosy 90 series. If you have a little bit of skill with building, they go together pretty easy and much less expensive. You can make it as "fancy" as you want at first until you get it how you want it. The one I just finished the design on will have a padded armrest because I am tired of leaning on a hard edge. If you need any help with the design or measurements please let me know. I'd be more than happy to help. I can even convert it to your funny measurements.

I have two RTA's, which are functionally fine and well. I'd have to agree with Dave on this. Design and build one yourself based upon another design. Not to get on tangent but in analogy, I rarely follow any recipe when I cook and in making music, I don't always stick to the tried and true of what everyone has done. Pick and choose what elements you like and think are functional in design and incorporate these into making one that works specifically for you.

Course, that strays form the prefab idea and involves a lot more work, but if you use can templates, pencil, saws as all other relative tools, it could yield more satisfactory results for less money and with better material choices.

In going with the offered above. I've seen the second option being used quite often in the display rooms at GC. It seems to an ok desk and if you need more space, you could build a nice desk rack (which, I've seen some guys who build amps make some nice furniture quality functional racks) or, you could go with a roll rack on the cheap. They don't hold an immense amount of weight like multiple power amps, but they are capable of basic expansion.

Meh, maybe he's got the money anyway, but I know what I'd be doing in his position, calling someone's bluff. As anyone who knows me, and there are a couple here, will tell you, I'm a cunt, but I'm a cunt who always follows up the BS with good honest action. Decisions decisions...

Sooooooo Simon-Sweetie, baaaa baaaaa, if you aren't overloaded with cash and scared I might rape you, you might think about taking the advice and making a desk yourself. Those prices are a piss-take, after 3 weeks of having one of them in your room, you'll look at it and think of the better things you could have spent your cash on.

Do some measurements for a desk which will accomodate the shit YOU have, and make it yourself. You don't even need to be a DIY'er (pfffft, although we all know you are, sorta), just draw it out, with proper measurements and get your arse down to B&Q. They will cut the MDF up for you, IIRC it's 50p a cut, so you have a pile of board all nice and straight (pfffft). It'll cost you about £60 all in. I'd offer to do it on the nice table saw I use for making set panels in my warehouse, but you might accuse me of hiding under a bridge and molesting goats.

Get yourself some glue, a drill and some countersink bits and a pound of MDF screws. Before you drill anything, make sure you have the panels in the right places, pencil in numbered sides as per your drawing to make sure.

Drill, c/s, glue and screw... if it takes you more than one of your days off, well, fucking hell, it won't.

Oh, and buy some eye loops and shackles for me while you are there...
