I found this scan online of a crib sheet from the early 80's of Satanic Symbols and their meanings It's funny to look at and the descriptions are equally entertaining. Metal music must have had the general public scared shitless back in the day.

It's funny, I was sort of put off by Dio back in the 80's because of those demonic covers. Then, a friend of mine blasted me with "Dream Evil" over and over and I realized he was really just a straght ahead hard-rocker (and quite skilled!) That old saying about not judging the book by the cover sort of appies here.

Jinx from Coven did "The Horns" first. Black Sabbath ripped them off too. They wern't posers tho, and didn't write Christian lyrics. IE, Satn wasn't the bad guy around the bend. Her fame was singing "One Tin Soldier" theme song to Billy Jack. She was hot, truly Satanic, and had an incredible voice and stage presence. IMO, very underrated, and hardly mentioned in metal circles. Even Alice Cooper, Kiss and King Diamond amoung other was inspired by her...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jinx_Dawson
Much like my southern Italian heritage. We wore gold Horns around our necks, or the Corni (single horn, or pepper), and in our cars to ward off the Evil Eye. Which is somebody wishing illwill or bad luck via envy. Dio's grandmother used to throw the horns, like my grandmother. The curse is called Maloccio (sp) Evil Eye...
But, I know what you mean. I have a funny story about being thrown out of my gilfriend's mother's church because I happened to be wearing AC/DC Highway To Hell T shirt. I didn't want to go, but I was forced. Forced? Yeah..I had to go or I wasn't permitted to see ( Bang) my girlfreind at the time. They wanted to make me become a born-again christian. Well, that didn't work out well. Instead, my girl, her little angel gave me crabs for my 18th birthday. So I told her mom..who beat her with a broom in the front yard. Very fond memories of that glorious break up.

I didn't know Jinx was the first, i always thought it was Dio. Thanks for that. Coven are awesome.
I'm from Cyprus and i remember i somehow got a hold of this little book that was published by the church warning about Satanism in rock music. I found a lot of killer bands through this book.
AC/DC, Black Flag, and KISS were/are not Metal bands IMO.
The list under Back Metal is equally hilarious. I guess the category / genre was unknown in Christian / anti-metal circles back then.
I don't get the Black Flag inclusion at all. Maybe TV Party upset them. Seriously the only thing I can think of is the cover for the process of weeding out has the devil on it (I love that cover) but at best flag was anti mainstream not satanic in any form.
