Deep Purple as a band was one of my ealiest influences. My Brother in law gave me the early albums"Shades of Deep Purple" and "The Book of Taliesyn"
in the late 70's and from then it was on. RIP Jon Lord
It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Jon Lord, who suffered a fatal pulmonary embolism today, Monday 16th July at the London Clinic, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer. Jon was surrounded by his loving family.
Jon Lord, the legendary keyboard player with Deep Purple co-wrote many of the bands legendary songs including Smoke On The Water and played with many bands and musicians throughout his career.
Best known for his Orchestral work Concerto for Group & Orchestra first performed at Royal Albert Hall with Deep Purple and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1969 and conducted by the renowned Malcolm Arnold, a feat repeated in 1999 when it was again performed at the Royal Albert Hall by the London Symphony Orchestra and Deep Purple.
Jon’s solo work was universally acclaimed when he eventually retired from Deep Purple in 2002.

RIP Sir. Classic distorted Hammond tone that defined DP's sound IMO.
Not to mention the only guy that could make keyboards look cool.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood

No weak links in Deep Purple, farewell Mr. Lord.

Biggest influence for keyboards.
He got tones out of a Hammond that others couldn't quite get!
I just happened to pick up Machine Head out of the bargain bin last week.
Lazy and Highway Star still give me goose bumps when dialed up.
Saw DP in one of their incarnations in the early 80's.
Great times!
RIP, Jon, and Kitty too.

Wow! Sad news indeed. I saw them on the Perfect Strangers tour and it was one of the best concerts I've seen. His keys sounded amazing!Rudy

was his biggest influence, took alot more from Blackmore than Clapton, to my ears at least, whammy use especially. But not to get off track,
this thread is for "the Lord", Jon Lord, a guy who made keyboards knock your teeth out, in a different way than the approaches used by bands like Yes or ELP,
fantastic bands they both were, but never had a band used keyboards in such a hard rocking way as Purple did, as i said, no weak links in that band, and when they reunited and had Steve Morse playing lead, it was an eye popper, I saw them on my birthday in '97 at the House of Blues in L.A.
They opened with Hush, it was a super fucking show, and it was a great night that turned into a 3 day siege of partying that was started by their music making its
way into my and my band of cutthroats' bloodstreams along with all the booze and other silly things we were doing that weekend. Not helping the situation since 1965!

Let's not forget it's his keys that open Space Truckin, not the guitar. It's also his keys that carry the song. Ritchie's there doing backup for the keys.Last edited by Newc; 07-22-2012, 05:27 PM.I want to depart this world the same way I arrived; screaming and covered in someone else's blood
