  • How to book a hotel...the non-hotels.com/expedia way.

I'm done with hotels.com and expedia and such sites. The hotel ratings and pictures mean nothing! When did a 3/5 rating $90/night turn out to be a total dump?? how do you guys book a hotel while on vacation?

Because of my work I spend a lot of time in hotels. I usually stick with Hilton brand since I have points with them.

In the old days it was a crap shoot. Still a crap shoot if you go somewhere you are not familiar with.

Agreed. The worst place I stayed in so far was Double Tree, which is a branch of Hilton. Keep in mind, the place was nice, it was just that nothing worked there on that night...cable, internet, ice machines.....it was a clusterfuck. They wouldnt adjust my bill to compensate for the inconveniences. If they would have told me they were having those problems when I checked in, I would have went somewhre else....but, they did not. Right now, I am checked into a Holiday Inn Express.......I drove an extra 15 minutes to get there so I could get my points....to find out that they are not a Holiday Inn Express as of this morning. Starting to think hotels like to fuck you over as much as cell phone and cable providers. -Lou

yeah man, they sure are. The last couple of years, all the bookings I've done have ended up in shit hotels. Previously, if a hotel was rated 2 and under I wont even bother. When my in-laws were visiting, we have stayed in $35/night hotels in bakerfield and the rooms were excellent! But now, even for $100/night, they are utter crap.

I just search for Hiltons, Marriots etc in the city I'm heading to. They'll have pics of the hotel but you also can google map the address and virtually cruise around the vicinity of the hotel

so, basically pick a hotel that already has a reputation instead of going for any random one pointed out by hotels.com. Got it!

Yes, unless you need to be cheap, then use the stars or whatever. But stars can be entered by employees so I'm not sure if I trust them.
