Get an old second generation Lexus LS400, best engines in the world, very rugged, go on for 300,000 miles, great mpg, not excessively complicated and you can pick them up for peanuts....like around $900 in the UK for a mint one.

And 300,000 for a petrol engine is pretty magical.

You'll get all the luxury...leather, air con, console etc for peanuts.

The cars you'll be looking at will all have high mileage by nature, the Lexus is the only one that will keep on going on though.

Put it this way, I was seriously considering buying one with 140k on the clocks, just to pull the engine and put it in my 3.5 tonne deisel pickup for a bit of fun.

(We are all about efficiency, reliability and power to weight in Europe, a 6.2L Hemi would weigh more than my pickup and since we are limited to a gross weight of 3.5T and 5.5T train, without excessive tacho rules, it would be a waste of time, not even considering that deisel has been $2.20 a litre, or $8.32 a US gallon for the last 6 months now and rising).

I'II just add that my 74 horsepower Ford Transit can carry 1600kg (1.6T) of stuff on a 10' x 7' tipper body, weighs in at 1900kg kerb weight and does 32mpg loaded...and yeah it is a '97. In terms of efficiency, I bet that blows your minds eh! The equivalent F350's I've seen do about 10mpg and weigh in at over 3 tonne kerb weight unladen with a tipper body that is effectively the same size or smaller even and all I see is people running compost about in them, which weighs nothing and leave the engine running whilst they chat to people at the side of the road......what a waste...FFS. F350's are for show, a Ford Transit is for a pro. The secret is the monocoque sheet metal chassis design you see....which rusts out in about three years...lol.

Anyway LS400 all the way. I wouldn't touch a used beamer. The really old E class Mercs were ok too.

In a land where everybody runs BMW's, Mercs, Audi's or Lexus, the LS400 has proved itself top of the pile for cheap, reliable luxury.

However, if reliability is really your thing, get a 1990-2000 Ford Transit, that will do 450,000 miles on two oil changes and if the cambelt snaps, you can repair it at the side of the road with a hammer and get moving again. Body options include 10' x 7' tipper, 13' x 7' x 7' Box van pickup, 13' x 7' pickup, Dual Cab or single cab and van. None of which are available in the USA. Ear defenders and a welder for the bodywork are a pre requisite though and should be sold with the vehicle. The old '90's Toyota Landcruisers will also go on forever.

Just think, if you all paid $8.32 a gallon you could have free healthcare and benefits for all and you would know most of the cash goes to central government, rather than Jo Smo down at the local station who has decided to put up his prices for the weekend as its the 4th July.

It all depends on what you want. In my opinion, a truck is a mobile wheelbarrow, so I stripped the cab out for weigh so I can run as much as I can in it for the best fuel economy and running costs. I also have the opinion that a mobile phone is for phonecalls and frequently gets run over, so I have one that costs $15. If the badge and status is your thing, then an old Lexus isn't for you.

Jag S type are cheap too, although lesser luxury. They are basically Ford's a Mondeo chassis and running gear design with a Ford Lion V6 engine, good engine's them. LS400 is better though.

So....in summary it has to be a '90's LS400, a '90's Toyota Landcruiser or a '90's Ford Transit....I don't think you have any more options. Merc and Beamer parts are hineously expensive and you'll be able to get parts shipped for the Lexus...which you probably won't have to do, in fact you could probably just buy another one.

High mileage, luxury car with unknown history? Has to be the LS400, it's the only choice you have I reckon.

Don't let it's American looks deceive you, it's a proper car.

Ride like a pimp on the wage of a prossie!

I was actually thinking about upgrading to a newer high milage Aston Martin Vantage Roadster... but I haven't found any cheap enough.

I'd be too paranoid to park it anywhere though.

For Real? I know someone with a new Aston Vantage. Really nice guy and great car and all, but you can't help thinking to yourself.....

        .....what a cunt.

Correction: It's actually a DB whatever they got out now...which makes him a double cunt and a twat.

I'd take the word from a Ford Transit driver over the word of a Aston owner anyday..em..unless they are a pikie.

For the prices some of these vehicles sell for, I say get something really cool and ultra reliable with style none of these can match. Go for a 2013 Mustang Shelby GT500 it looks badass and has 650 hp on tap, meets emissions standards everywhere, it will be under warranty, gets over 20mpg's, and you're not likely to see another one in your neighborhood

No, not for real. More like I really wish. Ain't gonna happen though.

Mike, you have a Jag coupe? Maybe look into Aston fiberglass rear & front kit:

I would never do that to my Jag. The Aston DB7 shares a lot of the same parts as mine. I don't like the new XK's but I do like the new Astons. The Astons don't depreciate as much as the Jaguars, so that's why I'll probably never own one.

My XK sold for $100k+ in '04... it's an '05MY. 6 years later, when I bought it, it had suffered a little more than 70% depreciation even though it only had 30k miles on it and was on it's first set of original tires. The '03's and later are great. All the mechanical issues plaguing the model had been worked out by then. 04 and later are super reliable. There isn't an exotic around that is that much of a bargain.

The body style came out in 96 and it still has a classic and modern look. It's one of the few timeless designs. I just fell in love with them. You can get 96-00 models for under 10k now, most of those have already had all the issues taken care of as well. Best value for the money out there, IMO.

Xeno, any experience with 96-97 XJR's? The supercharged 4L 6cyl. I spotted what might be a gently treated one. I've read the 98's and up (V8's) had some major issues with the nikasil (sp?) linings, timing chain tensioners and cooling. Scared me off, lol

Nikasil is no longer an issue. In fact, if you find a car with Nikasil coated liners that's still running today, you're actually better off with them. Sometime around 97-00, the sulfur content in some gas was still rather high. This caused accelerated wear on those liners. If you find a car that survived that, you're golden. Many high end auto manufacturers still use Nikasil lined aluminum for cylinder walls.

I really don't know much about the XJRs, but if you're looking at the 96-97, don't get the V12. Supposedly those are nightmares if things go wrong. If you find one with AJ-V8, just ask for documentation proving that the secondary tensioners were replaced some time after 2002 with the 3rd generation units. The 1st and 2nd Gen tensioners would get brittle, and if they failed would usually result in catastrophic failure. Almost every XK or XJ with these motors still on the road have had these issues addressed. It's also easy to check the secondary tensioners by removing a valve cover and just looking.

The transmission should have been rebuilt sometime between 75-100k miles. Those ZF transmissions were horrible for those years. A flaw would end up pushing one of the rings that hold the guts inside, out. 3rd party Jag transmission shops usually welded this to fix the problem from arising.

Also, ask if the water pump has the metal impellers (the plastic ones got brittle and would disintegrate causing the engine to overheat) and make sure the thermostat housing is metal. If those issues have all been addressed, the car will be mostly trouble free.

At least those were the only issues regarding the engine/transmission during the 97-2002 era that needs to be addressed. Most of those cars still on the road have had them fixed, but you still need to verify it.

That's the reason why some of those cars sell for so cheap. If you can shadetree it yourself, all of it can be done relatively easily, with the exception of the secondary tensioners... those require a little more effort, but many people have done those themselves.

Thanks, buzz, it is a trippy (I like to say "unique") car, eh? It's actually a 1996 with a 2000 front clip & hood. (I bought it that way) and later added the 17" IS rims. So it's really light like the early LS, but looks like a later model. I'll never see another one like it, even here in SoCal!

Those things are really beastly. They're really nice too. I'm talking about normal 550hp CTS-V's... That thing you posted... unbelievable... I'd say WHY???? but there is no rhyme or reason to car people. They do things like that just to do them.

I'd still take my XKR over a newer vehicle. Might not win all the races, but I've owned it for over a year... I can still sit there and admire my car. I've owned a lot of cars, and it's one of the few that have had any extended "honeymoon" period this long.

Neither unless you are either a mechanic or you have lots of money to spend. They are both extremely expensive cars to maintain.
