Is the only difference the full/semi auto capability, and is the barrel exit velocity/stopping power the same as a military grade rifle? Just asking.

They are not full auto/select fire military issue. They are semi-auto military style autoloaders. There are many centerfire auto loaders with pretty wood stocks on them, the ones you would look at and just think "its a hunting rifle, thats ok then" There are multitudes of us who respect all firearms and just because I own some guns that "look" like your so called "assault" rifles doesn't mean I am assaulting anyone with them. Unless that dumbass shows up looking to cause bodily harm to myself or my family. An 870 Remington 12 gauge pump shotgun, a "hunting" firearm would work just fine.

Here's what I find amusing too. 5.56/223 to me is nothing more to me than a weak, albeit fun round to shoot without wearing my shoulder out after a long day of target shooting. Yeah, it's terminal as hell at close range, but stretch out it's legs and it's ineffective as can be. If I recall correctly, max effective range is either 600 or 800 meters? Not that I'll ever be shooting at that range. If I had to absolutely use any of my rifles with the intent to harm what it was pointed at, my M1 Garand or my M1903A3 in 30-06 are the rifles that are going to do the talking. I'd much rather be using 30-06 to defend myself with than 5.56/223 in a firefight. I'll take knockdown and maximum effective range over high capacity any day of the week. For in house defense the Norinco Model 37 12 gauge trench shotgun clone and one of four 1911's and a Glock 19 will handle that task nicely.

Some would argue control of weapon is imperative during a close quarters fire fight. At house range issues?...I'm sure plenty. I agree though, about the only good thing with a .223 at 350+ yds/meters is praire dogs with a thin skinned massively expanding 52grain hollow point. Love Garands, man are they getting pricey. No one can argue the effectivness of that 1903 what a bolt gun, and do they ever make a great sporter. Home defense, we could all argue our favorites, something quick, reasonably short and easy to point with confidence when called upon.
