I don't think being in a hurry to type something and slipping up on some grammar shows that someone is 'fundamentally incompetent'. Wiens made a couple of mistakes himself:
"The person who has decided to not care about grammar is not the kind of person I want to work with" - hanging participle
"Every company that is dealing with professional clients should have a modicum of professionalism in their communications" - a company is considered a singular entity, not plural, so it should be 'its communications', not 'their'.
