  • Smokey & The Arse Bandit

I'm watching "Smokey & The Bandit", for the umpteenth time, and I know it's only a movie, and shouldn't be taken too seriously, but someone, please, WTF is going on?

I can't get my head round what the premise of this film is. Is piss-water beer illegal in some places in America? Are all American policemen supposedly that stupid that they can't catch a fucking lorry full of beer, simply because some tosser in a wig drives like a dick in front of them? Just how easy is it to evade anyone in a big lorry once they know even vaguely where you are? Are all Po-lice Sheriffs big fat rednecks? (Ok, I do know the answer to some of these questions, but still, I'm at a loss here)

It does my fucking loaf in, I can't make head nor tail of it. Why bother with the "story"? Why not just call it "Driving Like a Tit", and just have all the driving nonsense without the thoroughly confusing issue of some apparently highly illegal piss-beer. I mean, why not make it about smuggling hard drugs or something? Coors? I wouldn't wash my bell-end with Coors, but why would it be illegal? (The beer, not washing my bell-end)

This has been bugging me for a loooong time, but I need to get to the bottom of it all, so I can sleep soundly.

There is a man in it called "Big Anus". WTF??? So much potential...
So I woke up,rolled over and who was lying next to me? Only Bonnie Langford!

    I nearly broke her back

Back when this movie was made, Coors brand beer was illegal east of the Mississppi. Back then, they didn't have the technology to catch someone like we do today. Also, many of the jurisdictions were like a different country. If you could cross state or county line without them catching you, you were good to go....as long as you didn't return. Alot has changed since then.

As a sidenote, Yuengling beer just made its way, legally, into Ohio just a couple of years ago.-Lou

Well the car is running as a blocker for the big truck is how it works. The police in each state weren't aware of that part.
Coors was illegal east of the river so Lou is right about that,it was a huge thing to have it.I never cared all that much for it.
We did that blocking with a car or truck trick hauling coal in Eastern Ky back in the 70's and got many overweight loads up north to Canada.
We would head out in the early evening from the mines with the BIG loads sneak thru Ohio and Michigan by dodging the weigh stations using the back roads.
Sometimes on the interstate we would shut our lights off and use a blocker truck to go into the scale and pretend to break down sitting on the scale so they couldn't see us go by.
We would always run in a pack and not stop even if they chased us.They might catch one but seldom more than one.

Canada border officials didn't give a rats ass how heavy the coal trucks were because the power plants paid them off.

        Besides what's been said above.

They're crazy rednecks that love a challenge that someone says can't be done. Bufords son is the dumb ass. Buford is just an old redneck cop that is gonna get his man and fuck anyone that says any different.

Personally, i see it as inspirational. On both sides, no matter what happens, achieve the goal.

This is and will always be one of my all time favorite movies. Along with bandit 2, cannonball run, the original gone in 60 seconds, and other great car movies where there was no computer enhanced bullshit. Just actual people in actual cars doing actual stunts.

There was a movie with David Carridine called Cannonball that was good for its time. There was another movie called Moonrunners that was the seed for The Dukes of Hazard. The movie actually had Waylon Jennings as the Balladeer and Ben Jones played a federal agent in the movie. He was brought back to play Cooter in the TV show.

We also can not forget The Blue Brothers.-Lou

Car movies were better when they actually did the stunts.

Catching a "Lorry" is probably easy in England. They're small and not too powerful. I don't get the purpose of Eastenders.

Once you figure it out, you can move on up to "Dukes of Hazzard".

It's a show featuring ugly and stupid people who shout at each other, made to prevent the average Briton (An ugly, stupid and shouting person) from getting ideas above his station.

Eastenders is a work of fiction. Go where the fiction is based and you'll find they are all Pakistani with a few Somalis and various other muslim nations thrown in. You can buy sheeps heads n the stores any material you want and fake Nikes in the shops, but a white person you will not see. The cinemas are all Bollywood cinemas and no one speaks english.

Hell if you go past the wrong area, you'll have the muslim vigilantes after you if you dress wrong, drink alcohol in the street or offend them.

As for 'Lorries', em I think a Scania R730 will piss all over anything by Mack or Peterbilt.

If you want an example of everyday life in the UK, watch the scene in Trainspotting when the american walks into the pub.

I always though Burt was better in Deliverance.

The Dukes of Hazzard was real.

My thoughts exactly! And Ginsambo, I think you had too much Guiness down at the pub. Your Scania looks like what we call a yard goat - they tote around empty trailers at loading docks. That thing is HILARIOUS!! How do they keep those things from tipping over if they aren't pulling a trailer?! Pip pip. Cheerio.

I wasn't alive in 1977 so I could be wrong, but I don't think Coors was "illegal" east of the Mississippi. I think it was the unlawful and unlicensed attempt to sell it that was illegal.

It was illegal to sell, distribute and have in your possession in certain quantities ( Probably a 12 pack or so ). Technically, many states can confiscate your liquor if it is brought in from another state as there are usually laws that make it illegal for you to have liquor in that state if you did not pay taxes for it in said state. It is not really a big deal now, but, I got pulled over and the Ohio State Patrol officer frowned on my 3 gallons of LEGALLY purchased moonshine. He was cool and let me go, but, he could have easily confiscated it and then took it home to try it out for himself. -Lou
