DonP - I think with prices going up and up right now, you got a good deal. My question is if you have something that is on the list for "banned guns" (WWII M1 Carbine) is it best to hang on to it (will never use it), or if they ban it will I be out of luck if I do try to sell it? Great info here - who knew so many others would have similar interests?! J/C's and guns!

Dropped some coins on a 1944 K98 Mauser today and go pick it up on Wed.
One of these has been on my wish list for a long time.
Don, can you verify if you Norinco has a milled receiver?Last edited by Razor; 02-05-2013, 12:51 AM.

Razor the K98 is on hold until Wed.
Its a late Waffen Werkes Brunn so its a Nazi occupied Czech made Mauser.DOT mfg code on the receiver.
Has all the proof marks and from what I have read Waffen Werkes made the barrels for the MG 42 machine guns from 43 thru 45.it has the same milling marks you see on MG 42 barrels.
Has all the indicators of being a late WW II production era K98.Matching numbers too.
I'll have to decipher the other stamps on it when I get it home.Last edited by straycat; 02-05-2013, 03:38 AM.Really? well screw Mark Twain.

To tell you guys the truth, It's pretty infrequent when I get to shoot. Maybe a half dozen times a year. My sons often pressure me "we want to go shooting"

If I remember correctly, those came out in the mid-90's and were $179 and they replaced the MAK-90's after the Bush import ban. $850, I think you kinda got screwed. The good news is that a number of places offer conversion wood for it.
Norinco quality is hit or miss. Their early AK imports coming off their mil-spec lines were actually quite nice. Quality of the MAK-90's? Some were really nice, others were pretty horrible, though never quite as bad as on the MAADI or some of the later commercial Romanian stuff. A number of the first ones came drilled for an auto sear, those were recalled but a number of them got into the market. The Norinco 1911s were really nice, those were billet guns. The Norinco M14's bolts and receivers weren't correctly heat treated, but once you corrected that issue, you're actually pretty good to go. Norinco SKS's are really all over the map. There are military ones that are amazing... then there are later commercial models that were all hand fitted and literally assembled in huts because they couldn't make them fast enough for the US commercial market.
Your post-ban rifle is actually really decent. Originally they sold for really cheap because when they came out nobody really made aftermarket wood and sporterized military rifles generally sell for less than their correct looking counterparts, and sporterized stuff isn't as desirable. The 2nd Amendment: America's Original Homeland Defense.

Cool. Good to know. It's actually got a nice feel to it the way it is.
I did a quick eyeball on the barrel length - I thought it might be a 20" for accuracy, but appears to be shorter (16"). This was an unscientific measurement next to my 22" tall aquarium

Don, I'd run the hell out of it. Milled Norinco's get very high praise, and I'm sure yours will perform well. Considering what WASR 10/63's are bringing right now on Gunbroker ($800.00 plus) I think you did just fine. I doubt it's ever going to be a highly collectible piece. Norinco 1911's haven't been imported in years, and even thought they're held in pretty high regard by 1911 fans, they still only bring four to five hundred dollars.

I bought an SKS (Chinese Norinco) for $400.00 about a month ago. I have a Tapco tactical stock on the way and I've been buying the Tulammo 7.62 x 39 at Wal-Mart for $5.98 or whatever for 20. Their "one box per day" or "three boxes per day," depending on the store, really sucks.Member - National Sarcasm Society
