Cheap Electronic Drum Kits?

I have a four year old son who is showing interest in drums (insert drummer joke here). His name is Jackson (the wife would not let me name him Jackson Charvel) so he cannot be a drummer. I am thinking if I get a cheap kit now, maybe he will get past this phase, pack up the kit and it will never come up again.

Can anyone suggest a cheap five piece electronic set that will come with everything in one kit? I have scanned through ebay and MF and have seen some kits at $500 but I am not sure what to look for. I do not need an amp but the kit's brain/controller must have a headphone jack and a wide range of sounds is not needed.

Get him the RockBand/Guitar Hero rig with the kit. Has a headphone jack, plus he can learn to play real songs (mostly), and then graduate to a real e-kit or acoustic kit if he's good enough.

dude, if you want him to be able to gig consistently through his life, let him be a drummer - or a bassist!! as far as cheap electric kits, I second what lou said....

Thanks Lou for the link. I was showing my son the kits and he kept say "no, not that type of drum", ends up he wants an acoustic set. I will keep working on the e-kit.

Too bad no one makes e-kits that look like acoustic kits.

Alot of people have converted their E-kits onto acoustic shells. No one I heard of does it factory that way. I think Alesis and 1 or 2 others use actual drum heads with their digital triggers, but, it still looks like a digital kit.

Here is a way to convert an acoustic set with piezos to quiet them down real good: http://www.apartmentdrummer.com/?page_id=31 Keep in mind, you still need the control module which could set you back a couple to few hundred on top of the modifications you would need to make.

Al, just explain to him with an E-kit, he can copy sorts of drum sounds versus just the one on the acoustic kit. -Lou
