It's too bad he and Glen Hughes couldn't get along, I would have loved to see those guys live.

yea, it's a shame. Glenn wanted to play out but Joe's solo schedule kept getting in the way. They should hire Blues Saraceno and take BCC back out.

I think for JB it was a project for kicks, but for Glenn it was a "supergroup" that was going to make him wealthy.

His playing is sterile, predictable, systematic, and cookie cutter-ish....much like Guthri Govan. Much like the Ohio State Buckeyes....over-rated. -Lou

A lot of blues doesn't work so well on the albums, in my opinion, it's much better live. B. B. King, Walter Trout, Robert Cray, etc. often come across rather boring on their album work but are much better live. It's the same with Bonamassa, I think. At least I tend to listen more to his live stuff than his albums. It is difficult to do innovate much in blues--it's all about execution. I don't find his playing sterile at all.

I'm listening to these tunes. Sterile? Really? Well, we all have different opinions I suppose. I'm trying hard to find anything sterile in Joes playing. I don't even like blues for the most part, but this guys seriously rips. To me? Its tasty as all hell and he's a fuckin monster...but hey, what the fuck do I know....it does remind me of SRV and Eric J, but who cares. Awesome is awesome. If it sounds good. its good.
-Now....shut up n play yer guitar

true. And not just in blues. I was mesmerised watching the Steve Morse band live the first time. And found the album a little... bland?

Anyone who thinks Joe is trying to cop SRV clearly don't know SRV. Stevie Ray was a bulldozer, JB is more refined. Tonally & technically. He's not even playing in the same style. SRV is king in my book, but I'm not going to toss Joe aside just because. I think the Eric Johnson comparisons are closer to the mark, but he plays with more fire than Eric.

You made my point exactly!! JB is more refined and technically sound......sterile!! A style that does not go well with blues ( at least to my ears ). I never tried to compare the two saying JB was trying to be SRV. What I am saying is that people want someone to replace SRV so bad that they overlook feeling just to find a white guy that plays blues. Sure....he plays in the blues style.....but, he is not blues.....he is a technician. His playing ( again to my ears ), is about the equivalent to someone running through every blues scale in the Blues Scale Dictionary. I would rather listen to a cat go through a wood chipper than this style of guitar. Fuck...I can pop up YouTube and watch 13 year olds play the exact same shit for christ fucking sakes....and it is just as souless and heartless as this guy. I wish I could play the blues. I am too much of an accountant to do so. I am more like a guy that makes a great coach, but, is a horrible player. -Lou

I'm with Axe, I'll swap with him what I can do any day.

I've seen Joe live and he is definetly not bland or sterile to me. Not the next Hendrix or SRV you say? OK but that doesn't mean he sucks either. He is also a big gear hound like many of us here. Have you ever seen that shot of him standing with a ton of amps and guitars? Those were all his and not props for the shoot. I never met him personally but everyone who has raves about how friendly he is and wants to talk gear like the rest of us. I hope he continues to do well. The only part of his live show I wasn't thrilled about was the few opening acoustic numbers he did. But his electric stuff is good! I'll have to see if I can dig up the live shots I took from his show as well as that panoramic looking shot of him and his gear to post here.

that video proves my point. that's standard average playing any one of us could pull off, it's not special. it's not that melodic. buncha power chords and some uncreative fast licks, leaves me flat.

but I checked it to see if I was missing anything.... nope.

plus, I don't hate any guitarist, I just am not impressed with either the writing or playing there. I also wasn't the sterile commenter either, but each to their own. I'm just not impressed with Joe Bonmassa.
the guitar players look damaged - they've been outcasts all their lives
