  • Anyone here a knife guy?

I'm slowly getting into "good" knives and have spent the past few days with my new EDC folder, a Strider SMF. It's tanto bladed, so it should withstand prying and hard impacts more than a drop point, but I could only get it in CPM154 instead of the S30V I've been waiting for. But anyway, pics...

I'm gonna open so many MREs with this knife...

Post pics of your pig stickers.

It's not a very good picture, but this is one of mine.

I have a bunch of knives and bayonets... most of them are in storage. When I was in the Infantry you weren't allowed to carry personal weaponry... However I did get manage to get my Gerber Mark II approved that I still have, it's beat to crap and in storage.

The Master Tanto is an 80's era MIJ from the Lynn Thompson era... I think I bought it in 89 or 90. Too bad Cold Steel is a junk brand now... back in the 80's it was quite a nice production knife. Now the brand is crap. I still love it along with the other vintage CS stuff I have. I keep this between the bolster and center console of my car, in case I need it to break a window or for defense. I don't care what anyone thinks about this one. It's built to survive.

The Tanto Folder is damascus with blue titanium locking plates, completely hand cut. Pictures don't do it justice. It's custom made by an old guy in the south, Mel Pardue. This mostly sits in my case.

The drop point was custom made by an aerospace engineer that worked for NASA. He moved to California to retire and make knives. He was in a car accident shortly after he moved and died. This knife is dated 2/79, he died not long after making this one. The polish on it is incredible, it handles well and if it weren't a custom knife, I'd probably have it in my pocket 24/7.

            Random notes:

That 1st pic doesn't even look like a knife!

An ex-gf gave me a nice Gerber a while back; I have sadly misplaced it. When she gave it to me, she said the gift of a knife from a female to a male had a hidden meaning in her (Chinese) culture, and she did not tell me what that meaning was.

Spyderco is one of my clients. (I sell parts for industrial laser machines).

Thanks! It was my pride and joy for quite some time. It really needs to be re-ground though.

I started collecting knives in high school, stopped so that I could spend that money on guitars and a car instead, and just got back into it a few years ago. I've found a few that I really like - Zero Tolerance Shifter, Kershaw Groove, CRKT Ultima and Buck Nighthawk to name a few - and have even taken my chances with some of the Chinese knives simply because they caught my eye, although I avoid anything made by Taylor Brands due to past experience. My current EDC is a Gerber Armor, although I hated it at first and had to take it apart to get it to open smoothly and lock securely.

As it stands now, I can't bring myself to pay over $100 for a knife, knowing that I'm neither an outdoorsman or a true collector who can justify the expense.

I could only hope for the chance to cleanse the gene pool of some thug stupid enough to try a gunfight with me.

I'm just getting into knives now that they've made renewing my gun permit nearly impossible with the hours I work. Next vacation it will happen, until then I've turned to a good knife. Better than nothing and reasonably sure it would really be all I need. My problem is that I'm having a hard time finding exactly what I'm looking for without pay the same price as a gun. I also "play" with knives and whatever else I can throw and have it stick in something. Screw drivers, short lengths of emt pipe, paint scrapers, you name it. I've gotten pretty accurate and reliable throwing less than 6 feet with just about anything I can throw. Short of a $400 folding assisted opening drop or dagger point knife or actual throwing knives, I'm at at a loss for something that can take that abuse. For sharpening ease I prefer the drop point or dagger style blades. I don't like serrated either so I've really talked my self out of a lot of options.

It's a recurve so it'll take a little extra skill for sharpening, but ZT knives are rock solid. I used the 0121 folder my last deployment and it was a badass blade. http://www.skdtac.com/Zero-Tolerance...-p/zto.113.htm Since I can't seem to make new paragraphs, here's a pic of my kit about midway through my last deployment. The ZT was used daily to pry open crates and I used it to pop HESCOs a few times. Great edge retention and a hell of a stout knife. I still have it, it's just sitting in my bugout bag and my DB-L has moved onto my kit.

Not the point. It's so in the event someone were to search for that knife on Google and it were to link here, I'd rather not have my face and name attached to it.
