I like having the pros in it, and the majority of athletes across the differing sports are pros even though no one really ever hears of pro curling and bobsled competing circuits.

The pros bring higher levels of action than the amateurs do, BUT on the flip side coming home with a medal is a good way to raise the recruiting prospect of an amateur so I see that side as well. And I am not gonna lie; sure I like to see the NHL play but what the owners want means little to me and the Oympics are only once every four years, so if the owners can allow all-star games every year then there's nothing wrong with ones on larger stages with more at stake than bragging rights no one really cares about in the end.

      • I don't like see players getting injures in the games but after watching the tournament its too good of hockey to miss out on. Players are insured as part of the agreement I believe between the league and Olympics.

I do have mixed feelings on this as a lot of Euro players put more weight on playing for their countries than they do in the NHL and Stanley cup....Olympic Gold is their Stanley Cup. Pavel Datsyuk is a perfect example...if the Olympics were not going on I'm willing to bet he'd on LTIR and not played the 2 games before Olympics. Euros do what NA players do in the playoffs where they have to be near death to miss a game. It bugs me that Euros won't do the same for the team that pays their bills but will play for their countries.

NHL players in the Olympics is good global exposure for the game in my opinion so it does benefit the NHL to some degree but I know I'm fucked with Henrik Zetterberg on IR for a disk issue that opoped up after the first Sweden game and now won't be playing for the team that gives him 7 mil a year...ouch!

as far as recruiting goes you're right, *- see Ken Morrow (islander defenseman) but, the all star game is kind of a joke, though the skills competition is great. I just think it should be amateurs. and when I say amateur, I mean it for younger players. the word amateur from latin and old french means someone who does something for the love of it. that's how it should be. pros in the Olympics defeats the whole stinkin' purpose in my unhumble opinion.

              • Great game but Canada wins 1-0! Now it's time for Sweden on Sunday.

I'm glad I didn't have to see Phil Kessel or JVR score on Canada because I love them as Leafs but I would have been so conflicted to see them score against my country.

                • I only saw the last 5 minutes of the game, but, I'm relieved the refs didn't wreck the final moments the way they did in the Canadian women's hockey win.

If you believe any of the athletes involved in the any Olympic sport are amateurs you are wrong. Canada has a program for all winter sports called "Own the podium" that has had tens of millions of dollars dumped into it. (Probably over 100 million since before the 2010 Winter games.) I'd be willing to bet most nations spend that kind of money on their national program. The athletes may not be as individually wealthy as an NHL player, but they have just as much training cash behind them.

                            • I enjoyed the tournament but not the hours, coffee and hockey at 6am isnt right.

Now back to the real McCoy. Our Captain who played one game for Sweden before pulling out due to his back had surgery to remove disc fragments last week and will miss the remainder fro the season. Detroit's chances of making the playoffs for the 23rd season in a row may come to an end now. Gimmpy Datsuyk and Franzen returning from being out with concussion issues will be playing like he has is carrying a dozen eggs that cannot get broken also don't look too good.
