Does anyone know the St. Petersberg, FL area?

I'm going to St. Pete, FL for the Jon Oliva's pain show and know nothing about it. The concert is at the state theater. I've googled, but someone who knows the area will be much better than google.

Any thoughts on the hotel? I'll be landing Saturday afternoon and gone Sunday morning, so all I really care about is proximity to the venue and hopefully a tampa airport shuttle and cost. Can anyone help me out here? Just needing a clean place to crash for the night.

I grew up in st. pete and have played the state theater many times. there are three hotels within walking distance of the state theater.

it is nothing like NY or LA if that's what you mean, BUT there are a lot of aggressive transients around. let me know where you are going to be staying once you have a reservation and I can give you specific areas to avoid. overall, it is pretty safe. downtown st. pete is only a few blocks, so it's not too bad.
